Tell me of Fullmetal Alchemist (anime).

As the title says. I know there are two series, and that everyone says Brotherhood is better. Is one a sequel to the other, or are they both adaptations of the same story, or is it something else entirely? And how do the movies fit in?

So the first anime was released concurrently with the manga. Eventually it caught up and just sort of had to make up its own plot to keep going, so it diverged entirely from manga canon. Brotherhood was a later remake that followed manga canon. I've only read the manga so I can't really say whether the first or second anime was better, but the manga is one of my favorites! And yeah I don't really know about the movies.

They're both adaptations of the same manga, but the first series was done before the manga was over.
Because of that, the story changed after some point and the movie in a continuation of the first anime.
Brotherhood was done after the manga was over, follows it more closely and has the same ending.

The 2009 is an adaptation that was made while the manga was still ongoing, overtook it and went in another direction with the author's blessing. It's overall tone is more solemn and the themes are more open-ended/dark/cerebral.

Brotherhood follows the manga much more closely and is far longer, made after the story was finished. It's overall tone is more purely shonen action/adventure and is just overall lighter than the first one, tending to have early events that parallel the first anime portrayed with a lot less gravity.

The art style and coloring are a little different between the two of them and they have two VERY different endings.

Neither one is better than the other, they each just appeal to different audiences and a lot of people prefer one to the other.

Thanks for the info (to you and to the other posters here)! I'll probably end up watching both, since it looks like both are available on Netflix, and we'll see which one grabs me more.

I liked the first series better, including the direction it went after it caught up with the manga. I think this is an unpopular opinion, however, I think it's an unpopular opinion because a lot of FMA fans also read the manga and so "manga elitism" happened, as it does in every anime fandom. I'm not saying Brotherhood is worse, but for me, the first one was more beautiful. Better art (I feel like?), more concise, touching story.

tbh at their cores I don't think the original or brotherhood is better, they're just different takes on a similar story. There are plenty of elements of the original I like way better than brotherhood.

however, brotherhood's execution of its plot and tone is definitely the better of the two -- the only exception being that it sort of skims through the beginning... since I guess they expected you to have probably watched the original and it would have been more or less identical.
