The term didn't exist then (late 90s), but I catfished someone in high school . It wasn't like a romance sort of thing, I just invented an online persona that used to live in the area but had moved away and made internet friends with somebody who wasn't one of my friends, but not a close friends but who was a close friend to one of my close friends, and I felt like she was closer to that friend than I was and I just...I dunno wanted in on that, even if just anonymously over the internet. Then we slow-faded when high school ended.

Also, I was having all kinds of dysphoria then, so the person I created was the opposite gender, which was a...liberating experience, even though I grew into being comfortable in my own skin.
