I'm pretty sure there's a line somewhere-- probably from Maester Luwin-- saying that Bran will never have children (due to the spinal injury). That's why Rickon is still important; because although Bran is Lord of Winterfell, the Stark line can only paternally continue from Rickon. But then again with the magic he's involved with, who knows?
