How about "Random Harvest" by James Hilton? It's a classic, but I feel like most people have yet to read it.

Can I unsecond a book? I've never struggled to read any book as much as I struggled with The Difference Engine.

I know that feeling. Some day I will return to it, but it was just so... unengaging. I wanted to like it, I'd heard everyone praising it as the first mainstream example of modern steampunk, and I was like "I am fucking on that like butter on toast" then I found that each new page was a chore to get through and blagh. I wanted to like it so much.

If you're interested in early steampunk, have you read any of KW Jeter's or James Blaylock's stuff?

I haven't but I'll look into it.

As a William Gibson fan I have to agree, it's just not that great.

Ha, I also wanted to unsecond that book. Not because I've read that particular one, but because of Gibson's horrific prose in general, which I have tried and failed to like.

Thought I have heard The Difference Engine is a slog, even for him.

Un-thirded. Did *not* like that book and could never finish it.

I say Possession by AS Byatt

But only because lunabee34 convinced me to buy this book recently, so it would mean the least possible amount of effort for me to join in.

I still have to read that and I'm pretty sure I will like it when I do.

It's sitting beside me right now. But I'm still part way through my current book and trying not to have too many on the go.

Pick Possession, book club, and give me an excuse to be the book dilettante I know I truly am!

Hm, I need to read AS Byatt too. Never heard much praise for her, but I know she's a big fan of Pterry, and I live by the rule 'Person recommending book you love = book recommending person you'll love'

I was pretty bored up until about the last 1/5 and then it was really cool. So I can never decide how I feel about that book.

AS Byatt is one of those writers I think I should like but for some reason I don't. Angels and Insects is one of only two books I couldn't finish (the other is The Tommyknockers). I have also read an essay of hers, as well as introductions to other works, and every time I'm bored out of my mind.

That's how I feel about her novels. I love Edith Nesbit, but I just can't bring myself to pick up The Children's Book after slogging through Possession. (the peacock turban was too much for me) I like some of her short stories, like "The Thing in the Forest".

Oh sweet. I love her. She is one of my very favorite authors. Unlike someone else downthread, I think Angels and Insects is pretty well divine, and Possession is my favorite book ever on most days. I would recommend all of her short story collections as well.

Recommendation: The Lathe of Heaven, by Ursula K. Le Guin.

Ooh, second! I had my mom read that one after I did.

Anything by Le Guin is gravy in my book.

I love Le Guin but haven't read that one yet.

One more suggestion: Cotillion by Georgette Heyer.

Purely because it's one of my favourite ever books, yet strangely unfeted (although Dorothy L Sayers was very fond of Heyer's work). It's funny and clever but a short, light read.

Although I don't know how I'll take criticism of it, which there would be. It's definitely not a flawless novel and shows its age in places.

I think someone in the other thread mentioned Sarah Waters. Fingersmith is a pretty fast read and I would love to know what other people think of the ending.
