Old Pam wouldn't have needed validation from Archer, or from anyone else, though.

I don't think she'd have minded it

I mean, like everyone else in the cast, she had a lot of issues and problems. she was hardly some perfect put-together person, you know? she never showed a sign of giving a shit about her weight, but she was still kind of fucked up

So you prefer Cardboard Strong Women rather than Slightly More Complicated Strong Women. Got it.

da

idk, she's overall a very confident person but there were still some scenes in the previous seasons where she displayed insecurity and desperation

So, having problems and insecurities, like an actual human being, is what makes her boring to you.

Got it.

I only started watching Archer recently, but I'm having a difficult time grasping how taking a female character who was initially quite self confident about her weight, overall appearance and sexuality and giving her insecurities about her weight to the extent of acquiring a serious cocaine habit is an improvement in characterization.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-11 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, I'm of the mind that the weight issue is a justification, not the cause. She got hooked on cocaine, and now she's trying to play it off as "I'm just doing this to be thin." Addicts do that sort of thing. And they're definitely trying to show her as a right proper addict at this point.

Beyond that, I think that Pam always had insecurities. Most people do. And people who are over-the-top in their behaviors usually are more insecure than most people (Archer himself is a great example). I think that some of what we've seen from her has been confidence, and some of what we've seen from her has been bravado. And I love her more for there being a mixture of the two.

I like your explanation better, but frankly I think if you have to do that much handwaving to explain her 180 degree attitude change about weight and self image... well, it's probably wishful thinking on our part.

AYRT

See, I don't see it as handwaving. To me, all of this seems logical based on her character, the bent of the show, and the general behavior of addicts.

Now, I could be completely off-base. We'll see. I sincerely hope I'm not, but if I am, then I will concede to the folks in this thread (shit, I'll even make a secret about it).

But she certainly enjoyed being the best sex Archer ever had (there was also the pity sex Lana had with her).
