I sort of agree. I read the first book based on recs and couldn't fathom why people thought this was good. The plotting was just so very, very shoddy, the villains were moustache-twirling caricatures and the world made no sense. I've been given to understand that some of the wtfery is explained in later books, but idk, the first book has got to be able to stand on its own too, imo...
