those are the most cliché ya book covers i have ever seen. it's got everything: a nonsensical title in a bold, pseudo-original font; some kind of shape made of fire/ice/electricity; a background that wouldn't look out of place amongst windows xp wallpapers (take your pick: mountains, desert, thick forest, the ocean, city skyline); and a ~deep~ line about the power of will/faith/friendship/whatever that doesn't mean shit.

Also, two of the three have a color scheme mostly comprised of blue and orange

They aren't the original book covers. Just saying.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-10 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure what the appeal is. But I'm guessing it's something like, "people like different things."

I literally just read the first chapter after being curious about this series for a while. I agree that it's definitely not great literature and based on what I've heard I think the factions are even sillier than the Hogwarts houses but I think I'm going to enjoy this anyway so I'm looking forward to the rest right now.

"objectively shit"

gog I am so tired of hearing that

you didn't like it - okay. Some people do, stop staring down your nose, OP, and get over it.

[personal profile] jaybie_jarrett 2014-04-10 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I was afraid I'd be the only one thinking that.

Like...I'll admit it wasn't perfect but there was something about the book that drew me in.

Also ...how the hell is it anything like My Immortal? So some people liked the MC...I think it was like...two people. It didn't remind me of MI at all.

literally my first thought when i saw the preview in the theater was

"so hunger games 2.0"

i have no interest in this series until all the hype dies down. i'd never even heard of the series until i saw the preview.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-10 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
This is the Dystopian Chicago series, right? All I know is that my friend got the best laugh ever from a stray comment saying the kids in the film trailer were probably the happiest people who've gone into the university's library.

Is "objectively" the new "literally"?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-11 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
A word with its own precise meaning that just starts getting thrown around for emphasis until it becomes nearly meaningless? Why would you do that to a helpless word, OP?

I sort of agree. I read the first book based on recs and couldn't fathom why people thought this was good. The plotting was just so very, very shoddy, the villains were moustache-twirling caricatures and the world made no sense. I've been given to understand that some of the wtfery is explained in later books, but idk, the first book has got to be able to stand on its own too, imo...

I think Katniss' story in the Hunger Games worked because the government allowed two and only two choices--participate in our scheme or DIE, usually violently, and even if you "win," you lose, because we'll work you to death in the Capitol as our plaything, and also you'll get to see most of the children you tutor die violently the way that so many of your compatriots did. They backed up their threats, whether they were overt or just implied, and didn't tolerate even the smallest sign of opposition. And that was just if you were a Hunger Games participant/victor--the rabble back in the districts had absolutely no chance.

I slogged through the first Divergent book awhile back and all I could ever think was that, gee, for being a dystopian government, they sure allow a lot of wiggle room for their deviants/divergents. They're allowed some choice in the matter, while the powers that be just kind of go "hey whatever" or fruitlessly shake their fist, and that makes for kind of a shoddy dystopia. And I always wondered why they bothered allowing Divergents the choice, instead of either forcing them to fulfill a role or killing them and disavowing all knowledge of their existence, instead of going "you're totes divergent, that's weird, but shh, it's a secret."

I'm also baffled by the house structure in general (SO MANY QUESTIONS), but what I found especially odd was that the "bravery" house seemed to just be about combat and jumping on trains and stuff. "Bravery" and "fighting" aren't necessarily the same thing!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from reading reviews of these books I got the impression that the premise is: "Dystopian future where people are segregated based on a single personality trait, until one special snowflake Mary Sue girl DARES to DEFY THE SYSTEM by having... ~+*MULTIPLE PERSONALITY TRAITS*+~ (Gasp! So edgy!)"

It sounds really stupid.

I don't know why but the secret text gave me the weirdest nostalgia for the years of Pottersues/Deletrius and Quizilla...

(Anonymous) 2014-04-11 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
I think you answered your own question to some extent, OP. I read Divergent and thought it wasn't that great, but I also enjoyed it. I liked that it took a lot of really cheesy YA tropes and kind of almost made them work. Like there was a decent in-story reason for the goffik makeover, and the author justified having the main character look in a mirror and consider her own looks pretty adeptly. And the idea of an entire dystopian adventure based around the premise, "Everyone is supposed to have just one personality type, but I can't be chained to your Myers-Briggs!" is still chocolate-covered crack to my inner thirteen-year-old.

Not even related but oh my god being reminded of quizilla. I read my first porn there and just looked and teen nick owns it now. I shouldn't find this so funny.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-11 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
I like the first book because it works really well as a coming-of-age story. It's not brilliant, but I can see why it resonates with the YA audience.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-11 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
hahah I don't know. maybe it's jsut that they like it, you ever hitnk about that? not everyone is you and also not everyone cares whether it's "good" or not to the people who determine such things, sitting on theri high hrse in this towers. some people ust like things for the enjoyment that those things give to hem. and you are saying that this is wrong.

well hey.

somedaye maybe you will ike soething and somethin will tel you tat youa re wrong for it. how will you feel then op? how will youf ell when yo are told that you should not like something that you like? you will not bfeel bery good I think.

I can't comment on the story line but the writing is pretty shit? Last week I saw an add for it and figured, well, cool more dystopia riding off THG flagtails for me to read so I want to the book store (nice handy, up front display near checkout), opened it to a random page to read and - just - it's really poorly written, I'm not buying that.

Left bookstore with no new book :(

I think I missed last weeks discussion tho, can't find it? Cause it seems ppl here are enjoying it so maybe I opened to a bad random page.

I agree with everything in this secret.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-11 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Late to the party, but sharing anyway.

I'm a librarian, and I enjoy buying YA materials. I read this (listened via audiobook, actually), and I really enjoyed the first book. I couldn't wait to get to the second book.

When I actually did get to the second book, I gradually disliked it more and more with every passing day. I mean, really. How can she keep surviving and having those close escapes?

I've checked out the 3rd book 3 separate times, but I still can't make myself listen to it. To be fair, that's partly because I have lots of other audiobooks/print books. Mostly, though, I just can't care any more.

Then I read that Tris dies in the end anyway, and I wondered just why I put myself through the torture of reading all of book 2 as it was.
