Correct me if I'm wrong, but from reading reviews of these books I got the impression that the premise is: "Dystopian future where people are segregated based on a single personality trait, until one special snowflake Mary Sue girl DARES to DEFY THE SYSTEM by having... ~+*MULTIPLE PERSONALITY TRAITS*+~ (Gasp! So edgy!)"

It sounds really stupid.

I know it sounds dumb, but to me, as an adult with teenage children, I can see how it can have the effect of highlighting how it's okay to be 'different', and that's something we ought to hear when we are growing up.
There are perhaps some themes I'm missing, but on the whole, the themes seem to be good ones.

Nope, if anything it's a deconstruction of that.

Spoilers that shouldn't even count as spoilers because they're that obvious: Nobody has only one personality trait. They're just indoctrinated to look at themselves that way by the system and that's *gasp* why it's a dystopia.
