Shojo recs? Late question, but would appreciate answers

(Anonymous) 2014-04-11 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
I know late questions tend to get ignored, but I keep forgetting to ask on time:

Does anyone have some great quality shojo? I've honestly not read a lot. I was hoping for something that isn't endlessly serialized (as in it doesn't go on for 40+ volumes). Same with maybe a hint of maturity? I've always had difficulty finding manga I like, but Mars was a story that meant a lot to me as a teenager, so I was hoping to find something of similar quality.

Oof. Ask this earlier tomorrow and between now and then I'll try and assemble some recs. -__-a

Sorry don't really have any recs, except perhaps that Mars always really reminded me of Hana yori dango, which is unfortunately a long series.

I just wanted to leave a small tip that if you want more mature manga, you might want to look for 'josei' instead of 'shoujo'. I believe Mars also falls in the Josei genre.

I'd recommend you give Yumi Tamura's Basara a try. It was slowly going out of print for a while, but it looks as though VIZ is releasing it digitally; you can read the first volume for free.

It was published between 1990 and 1998, so it's completed (26 volumes). I did a post about it here , and there's a great general site about it here.

Not all of these are strictly shoujo, but all of them have at least shoujo elements? Anyways

Boku no Chikyuu o Mamotte: weird scifi/reincarnation/romance/apocalyptic thing; I personally think it's amazing in its weirdness, and I love the sheer character development.
Cat Street: Ex-child actor and social outcast slowly finds a new look on life when she discovers a unique charter school for people like her
Emma: beautiful and sweet Victorian romance between a maid and a rich young man
Fruits Basket: a staple of the shoujo genre, and for good reason; young, plucky high school girl discovers a family in which its member turn into zodiac animals when hugged by the opposite sex; so many different awesome characters and surprising holds some dark moments for the ludicrous premise
Miriam: wild west manga; young orphan girl is taken in by an older, sharp shooter together they fight crime; simple and fluffy manga with some romance in the final volumes
Omae ga sekai o kowashitai nara: dark vampire manga done right; it doesn't hold its punches; takes the concept of a cycle of hate and revenge spanning life times and pushes it to its limits
Red River: historical, girl-travels-backwards-through-time manga; very well researched and accurate; like game of thrones, be careful of who you get attached too, because A LOT of people die; overall it has a happy ending though, yay shoujo
Vampire Juujikai: says it's shounen, but i view this as a shounen/shoujo mix; lots of fighting sequences, but the backstory is PURE shoujo; there are so many plot twists, but they all feel natural rather than being for shock value; i may or may not have cried at the ending of this one

If you like any/all of these, I have more recs, but these are my highest rated, complete series.

Penguin Brothers!

It's really awesome, and what's more is that the main protagonist isn't interested in love, even though there is romance in the story. It's also a quick read. I rec the hell out of it!
