elaminator: (Avengers: Natasha)

This is one of those things I just can't agree on. IMO she was both excellently portrayed by Scarlett (she's as good a match as the rest of the cast) and had an extremely important role in Avengers. I find her far from boring and think she was one of the strongest parts of Winter Soldier. If the studio is smart about this they could have a hit on their hands.

I also don't get people's hatred of Renner as Hawkeye, but...again, whatever.

Because he's boring as fuck. A cardboard cutout would do better than him.
elaminator: (Avengers: Tony - Seriously?)

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-04-12 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
We're going to have to agree to disagree on that one. (I think you might be exaggerating just a tad bit.)

(Anonymous) 2014-04-12 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree - Hawkeye and the Black Widow were the main things I enjoyed in The Avengers.

Yeah, I think Renner actually did really well with the very little he had. I feel like maybe people see that the character didn't do much (and a lot of what he did, he did while in mind-controlled soldier mode), and just write off the actor as being bad. But I thought he got across what he needed to get across in the role. Looking forward to seeing if he can get more into the character in Avengers2.

Natasha isn't boring, but she is very low-key, which isn't always as exciting when you're next to, say, RDJ. But I thought she really brought it in Cap2--she seemed more comfortable with Steve, like she was loosening up a bit, willing to joke, and her jokes are kind of dorky and un-practiced when she's being more genuine. Again, I think she's doing the character in a way that makes sense for who Natasha is supposed to be.
elaminator: (Avengers: Bruce)

Exactly. If people have an issue with Renner himself, well...can't do much about that, but I don't see what he did with the character that was so horrible. He did what he could with what he was given. Granted, he didn't stand out, but he fit in just fine. The storyline Hawkeye was given didn't allow for much beyond being a pawn for Loki to use. No one has to give him a chance...but I think he deserves one.

She felt very real (and likable!) in Winter Soldier. You saw a lot more nuance from her. Not every character can be as big and loud as Tony Stark, and while I LOVE Tony, not every character should be. (Plus...she's a spy, what we've seen works for her very well.)

(Anonymous) 2014-04-12 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I think he stood out. I had *no* idea what The Avengers was about or really any idea of the superheroes other than the Hulk but Hawkeye and the Black Widow were the main things I noticed and paid attention to. (Like I said, I had no idea, and I spent a good portion of the movie thinking Hawkeye would die and feeling sad about that.)
elaminator: (Hawkeye: Clint needs coffee)

Awww, I'm sorry you fretted through the whole movie over his fate! That's the thing, even if you hate or don't care much for a character that doesn't mean other people won't see something in them or that character can't be another persons favorite. I liked Hawkeye just fine and want to see more of him, but clearly there are a lot of people who are enraged that Renner even has the role. I don't see where that's coming from, but...again, everyone is different.

If TPTB were going to kill off Hawkeye I think they would do it later, after they've given him more characterization and back-story and made everyone (or most people, anyway) super attached to him. I doubt that will happen, though. (Hopefully...)

(Anonymous) 2014-04-12 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
That's ok, I didn't fret the whole movie, just until Natasha whacked his head and he was free of the mind control.

I agree, which is why I don't mind most TV/books/movies even if I'm not fond of them. Different stuff appeals to different people and that's cool. It allows for greater variety.

I don't know what the thing is about Renner that upsets people either.
elaminator: (Hawkeye: Clint & Lucky)

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-04-12 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, okay. I don't think it took long for us to find out he was okay, so that's a good thing! The Clint/Natasha fight was one of the better action scenes in Avengers, actually. I enjoyed their relationship on a whole but damn, that hand to hand fight scene was badass.

IA, man. I wish people didn't get so up in arms about characters or stuff they didn't like. It's okay to dislike something but...some people just get too angry about it.

We'll probably never know, but I'm hoping people will warm up to him in Age of Ultron. He hasn't been given much screen-time, and most of the screen-time he was given was either under Loki's control or shooting aliens. IMO he gets judged too harshly.

The way I look at it, if people have that strong a reaction, it means the show (movie, book, whatever) did something right. I'd rather have a divided love-or-hate to my work than just "...meh." Because then I know I did something well enough to bring out real emotion, you know?

With a very few exceptions, Black Widow and Hawkeye are either love-or-hate... well, actually, that's probably true of most of the characters, come to think. I've seen people HATE Tony Stark, for instance. To me, that just says it's a strong, well-characterized piece of media. :)

As far as giving him a second chance, we can hope, but some people will be so colored by the first movie they won't. :(
elaminator: (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D: Melinda May)

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-04-12 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
For the most part I agree! There are some instances where I feel the writing is such shit or the characterization so weak that I don't buy into the hatred being...well, earned in the way it should, but in a lot of cases, yea, it does signify a success. (Governor from Walking Dead, I'm looking at you.) I probably won't ever understand what about movie!Hawkeye inspires such feelings (at least not at this point; after Avengers 2, who knows), but...it happens. At least people aren't indifferent, I guess. I see why some folks think indifference is worse than outright hate.

Blergggggg. Poor Clint. Maybe he'll be so awesome in Avengers 2 that even his haters will change their minds and worship at the altar that is Barton. Or maybe not. IDK.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-12 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
Plus...she's a spy, what we've seen works for her very well

Bingo.

It seems that people who dismiss her as boring don't understand the espionage subgenre. It's not all James Bond.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-12 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
I would see a Black Widow movie in a heartbeat, even if it was terrible. Even if she didn't cut her hair and it flew in her face constantly. Haters are welcome to their opinions; more Black Widow for me.
elaminator: (Avengers: Thor/Cap)

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-04-12 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Me too! But then again...I'm one of those people who have watched and enjoyed all the MCU films, even the 'bad' ones. Granted, some of them I'm not terribly fond of, but there's always something in them that I enjoyed and found worthy of rewatching.

So I have no doubt a Black Widow movie would be the same. And if Marvel could do what they did for Cap for Widow they could have a fantastic film on their hands.

But even a shitty Black Widow film would probably excite me more than another Iron Man, despite the fact that I really like the Iron Man films and Tony Stark in general.

(I looked past the hair easily enough, but...god, I do hope they do something else with it. If I walk out with my hair down and it's windy that shit gets EVERYWHERE. I literally cannot see and hate my life, lmao.)
