She could have gone away to school, she could have gone off on a mission of her own of some kind, etc. I hate how death is the go-to for removing a character from a show. Even the old "oh look a different actress let's all pretend not to notice" is better. If a death serves a plot, and serves the character's own arc, that's one thing. But death as a way to remove a character from the current narrative is lazy.

I agree and wish they wouldn't have killed Allison off, but at the same time I DO think it's believable that Allison chose to stay and fight for her friends instead of leave. It would've been hard to believe she left her friends in their time of need, but I think I would've preferred if Jeff could have came up with a reasonable explanation for her to leave that made sense for the character. I know Crystal wanted to do other things, but I've never read anything about her wanting Allison to be killed. That shit ruins all my head-canons. :( Poor Allison, she was so young...
