Tumblr cares not. The actress could make a video telling everyone that she wanted to be written off, and people would still be saying it was his fault.

She asked to be written off? If that's true it sure doesn't seem like anybody knows about it :/

She did. A lot of tumblr knows about it. They don't care.

clearly he should have respected the dignity and choices of strong female characters by ignoring her request to be written off

duh

Oh no! :( I'm so sad. I keep meaning to watch the series past Season 1 and I think Allison/Scott make an awesome couple and Allison/Scott/Stiles an awesome OT3. :(

(Anonymous) 2014-04-11 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
ok see here is the thing

it is perfectly possible to write off a character without straight up killing them

but writers for shows seem to have a hard time grasping this concept (especially when the character happens to be a lady)

The problem, as I see it, from an outside perspective, is that Reed doesn't exist in a vacuum. The show has a long history of killing off women/minorities, and, you know, keeping all the other guys alive or sending them to London.

No, but it is his fault that he wrote her off horribly. Was that seriously the best story he could come up with? A stupid romantic storyline out of the left field and then sidelined for most of the season in favor of Allison 2.0(TM).

Well, one, it was a stupid death scene. I'll let that slide though because all of TW death scenes are stupid. The other thing is that they could have just put her on a bus or something. They're gonna do that to Issac. Shit, the two could have gone together.

The issue isn't so much that Crystal Reed wanted to leave. The problem was how Jeff handled it. Colton Haynes and Daniel Sharman also asked to leave, and their characters got to leave the country alive. It's part of a continued trend of Jeff Davis killing female and/or minority characters and leaving the white guys alive.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-11 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
HOW ABOUT NOT KILL HER. Can you honestly not think of a single thing to do with her other than kill her?

OR or, how about actually use the character throughout the season and build up to an actual emotional purposeful death, instead of this waste of space and talent that was Allison this season. It would have been AWESOME if she were also infected with the Nogitsune, and also make a ton of sense story-wise, and then her death would actually work within the story.

What was he to do? Honestly.

Killing someone off isn't the only way to write them out of a show. I've seen half a dozen really well reasoned ways that Jeff could have written her out of the show, ways that would have been totally in-character for Allison, without killing her. It was just easier for him to totally sideline Crystal for almost the entirety of 3B and then kill her off to boost the manpain of Scott and Chris. This is hardly the only example of Jeff being a lazy writer. The show is full of plot holes, continuity errors, unresolved story lines and loose threads. The only reason I'm even considering watching season 4 is because I really care about the cast, especially Posey.

I was really surprised when I had Crystal Reed asked to be written out given the way she was bawling all through her talking had on Wolf Watch.

She could have gone away to school, she could have gone off on a mission of her own of some kind, etc. I hate how death is the go-to for removing a character from a show. Even the old "oh look a different actress let's all pretend not to notice" is better. If a death serves a plot, and serves the character's own arc, that's one thing. But death as a way to remove a character from the current narrative is lazy.

She wasn't fridged. It's true. I wish they had showed her funeral though, that would have been really nice. I hope she isn't forgotten in S4.

THE ARGENTS COULD HAVE MOVED

(Anonymous) 2014-04-12 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
That's how the story started, for God's sake, and it's perfectly reasonable for families to move when three close family members die horribly in a new town. Allison already started season one with a canon backstory of moving around a lot, so it's not even that much of a stretch.

I was so incredibly upset but when I found out that she chose to leave, like I couldn't stay mad you know? I'm bummed but I know that Jeff would never have written her off unless she wanted it.

Yeah, Crystal Reed asked to leave the show in as permanent a way as possible, but what I've been wondering is why she wanted it to be so permanent. Other actors have moved on, but didn't actually insist on shooting an opportunity to earn a future paycheck in the face. I just find it hard to believe that a young actress would go "Never call me again, I'm done" after a couple of years on a popular show if there wasn't more to the story than just her losing interest. When Shannen Doherty was so totally written out of Charmed after Season 3 that they couldn't even use her likeness for the rest of the show, there was drama behind the scenes. So, I wonder.

I thought she deserved a better send off than what she got. If the writers knew she was going they should let her be a little more prominent during the season... but she kind of sitting in the background and then comes out to die.

They didn't have to kill her. Allison 'graduated' from her training, she could have moved away to instruct the rest of her family on their new code and shown the leadership position the writing was all talk no show on.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-12 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't give me that BS. He managed to not kill off Jackson, whose actor also left the show. You honestly think they couldn't have found some other way to send off the character? Especially after they did the same thing to Erica.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-12 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, idk, write her off in a manner that would allow the character to come back at some point in the future? I mean, it's not like her canon backstory establishes that she's never lived in one place longer than a year or anything...oh wait. It's not like there aren't other towns that have innocents that need protecting or something, given the family's code...oh wait.

So yeah, they easily could've written Allison & Chris out of the show in a way that didn't involve killing Allison, especially since I've heard since that JR is leaving as well. So I mean, don't give Jeff Davis a free pass. Yes, Crystal asked to leave but killing Allison off is not a "good ending". It's a hack ending and it seems that death is the only thing Jeff really knows how to write js.
