I can't say I agree but I know where you're coming from. Scarlett Johansson comes of flat in her acting. She can only play herself. Her Black Widow isn't terrible but it's not the Natasha Romanov we deserve.

Jeremy Renner, however, is god damn awful and is a shit Hawkeye. He needs to go away tonight and never come back. I would go see a Scar-dow movie. I would picket the Renn-eye flick.

Wow. That's a bit hateful.

I don't get it, man. Renner didn't get to do enough as Hawkeye to really get a feel for how he played that character. He's pretty much had, oh, three or four scenes as the character (instead of the puppet), and most of them are short and with minimal dialogue. I can see maybe not feelin' it, but it just doesn't feel like he's made enough of an impact to be called "awful." He didn't have much to work with.

Yeah, actually, Jeremy Renner is a fucking ridiculously good actor. He's the only one in the Marvel series who's ever been up for an Oscar and dude was nominated TWICE. The problem with his Hawkeye was that Whedon knew that he had to put in time building up Hulk, who we'd never seen Ruffalo play before and so couldn't be sure how similar he'd be to Ed Norton, and Black Widow, who was in Iron Man 2 but unlike all the non-Hawkeye Avengers, hadn't had her OWN movie (aka origin story) yet. And realistically, if you don't wanna make your ensemble flick painfully long, you can't spend too much time on too many people. Therefore, all Hawkeye got to DO in the movie was get possessed by Loki, spend the whole movie being possessed by Loki, and only in the end get un-possessed just in time for the battle. I really don't understand what you think any other actor could have done to make him better

tl;dr Barton got screwed by the writing, not the casting. Joss has even admitted this and said he's really looking forward to being able to write Clint as he's owed in the second Avengers.

DID he?? I totally thought of his performance in Chaplin but I thought it was just a Golden Globe nom

I agree. They're pretty terrible.
