The Blue Castle and Jane of Lantern Hill, by Lucy Maud Montgomery, did that for me. Both books have heroines who get out from under the thumb of an overbearing, intrusive, hypercritical parent-figure and discover that yes, they actually can be self-reliant and competent. There was a time when I really needed that.

The Anne of Green Gables books, and Maud Hart Lovelace's Betsy-Tacy series, were great for pure escapism. And Fruits Basket also cheered me up, even though there's a lot of sadness in it.

Yes, all of this forever. I only wish LMM could have done for herself what she did for so many readers. :(

Betsy-Tacy is just pure delight in a box. I love when other people have read it.

Wow, thank for reccing those books!

I love L.M. Montgomery (grew up reading Anne), but I'd never heard of those two books.

They sound exactly what I need to read right now.
