What TV shows/books/movies/whatever have helped you through depression?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-11 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Can be either real clinical depression or just "depression" in terms of a very low gloomy period of your life, which there isn't a good word for. I don't mean "this cured me!" or anything, just ones that you remember making you feel better/happier/more inspired/more energetic, or provided really good escapism.

Daria. Something about Daria's particular mix of cynicism and idealism is very comforting to me.

So many. But Black Books. That show always cheers me up. I also get some comfort in Bernard Black, who is a character I just relate to on such a spiritual level
I also watched The Last Airbender during a very stressful period of my life, and it helped me at the time quite a bit.

How I Met Your Mother pretty much single-handedly rescued me from the worst summer of my entire life. In gratitude, I stuck with it despite the fact it was swiftly becoming utter shit until finally dropping it in late season 7. I was SO BETRAYED. Fortunately, I wasn't remotely depressed anymore by that point, so my BETRAYAL wasn't that bad :) But still -- nothing in fandom had ever upset me quite so much as my ragequitting of that show, because nothing else in fandom had ever had such personal, real-life connotations for me.

Fallout 1, Half-Life, and Duke Nukem 3D kept me from doing something really self/destructive about 15 years ago.

The Blue Castle and Jane of Lantern Hill, by Lucy Maud Montgomery, did that for me. Both books have heroines who get out from under the thumb of an overbearing, intrusive, hypercritical parent-figure and discover that yes, they actually can be self-reliant and competent. There was a time when I really needed that.

The Anne of Green Gables books, and Maud Hart Lovelace's Betsy-Tacy series, were great for pure escapism. And Fruits Basket also cheered me up, even though there's a lot of sadness in it.

Keep the Aspidistra Flying was strangely comforting to me during my deep depression years. Also, Star Trek.

Gargoyles, Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine got me through my teen years. I was bullied severely to the point of attempting suicide, but when I got back on my feet those shows were still there. They were literally the ONLY thing I looked forward to for four years.

Chuck was the most recent for me. It's a pretty upbeat show.

Weeds. When I had to live alone away from my husband and I was sick as a dog, I just watched episode after episode of Weeds and it really cheered me up. It's still kind of comfort food to me.

Along the same lines, when I first moved on my own to a different state, away from my family, I had almost nothing for entertainment. I had a TV. No VCR (this was in the pre-DVD world). So I rented a VCR. And I could afford to rent ONE movie in addition to the VCR.

That movie was Kiss of Death. Yes, my friends, the classic film with not only pre-CSI David Caruso, but also Nicolas Cage and SAMUEL JACKSON and some dude that I thought was in Footloose but I guess he wasn't.* I watched that goddamn movie like 20 times to keep my mind off how alone and lonely I was, and it still holds a special, awful place in my heart.

*And Stanley Tucci and Ving Rhames. CLASSIC.

Final Fantasy VII. When I was really depressed, replaying it always felt like home.

The MCU is great escapism! The last month has been...well, utter shit, so having Winter Soldier to obsess over is making things more bearable.

Tombstone.
The Replacement Killers.
The X-Files.
Tremors. It was on almost every day for two months on AMC, and I watched it nearly every time.

At the lowest point of the pit of despair it's always music that drags me back to the living. Classical (Prokofiev, Pärt, Barber, Satie); alternative (Bowie, Eno, Roxy Music, Ani diFranco); or any world music with a drumming and/or strong beat (DHOL Foundation, Banco de Gaia, some of the Talvin Singh collaborations).

For lightweight mopeyness I watch Buffy, DS9, The fifth Element, Flight of the Conchords, or early seasons of Fry and Laurie.

The Walking Dead, oddly enough. I started watching it at a low point and it was so removed from what was going on in my life that I felt okay watching it, where watching anything else felt sort of like cheating on being sad, if that makes sense. (It probably doesn't.)

The Merlin fandom helped me through a terribly lonely summer, and the Avengers & STXI fandoms got me through some other rough times.

PONIES.

Fruits Basket.

Sorry, I am too mainstream. But those two have always been real pick-me-ups for me.

When I'm having a bad day, I watch Vincent and the Doctor. Doctor Who in general makes me happy, but that particular episode just hits all the buttons for me when I'm depressed. Like, Vincent coming to the future and seeing that people do appreciate him and he does have skills after all. That episode is pretty much made for depressed people.

Hometsuck kept me from killing myself! But more because I told myself I should wait at least until it finished. (Who knows when Hussie will ever actually do that now.)

Weirdly enough, it was Eminem who helped me finally take the last step away. He didn't "cure me" but he did help me realize that I had to start taking responsibility for my life.

I'll turn on dance music or hip hop as loud as I can and sing really hard.
Kingdom Hearts was big for me. Anime, in general, tends to serve as a pick me up because you can find so many characters who are just bursting with optimism and can-do attitude. Yowapeda is definitely a pick me up when I'm down.

When I was going through a pretty bad bout of anxiety and depression I played a ton of Minecraft and it really helped. I think the music is probably a big reason of why - so calming.

First RPing, and then Inception, and finally kink memes, helped through really low points in my life.
