So, I just stumbled upon a fanfic writer that has, on their front page, a notification that 'non-consensual beta' is not appreciated. And. Just. What. What does that...it's such an asinine thing to say. I am irrationally angry about the entire thing. What manner of person can honestly write something like that?

I'd be compelled to beta the shit out of their work, but I'm a vindictive person.

Are they seriously comparing criticism to rape......??????

Urgh that sounds very SJW to be honest. :/ that would probably make me not read any of their work. Yes, people, comparing EVERYTHING you don't like to rape does actually downplay the seriousness of rape.

I think this is ridiculous, but I don't really get the people immediately jumping to rape. Rape is not the only non-consensual thing in the world.

OP, here. I didn't immediately jump to rape, myself. Just the phrasing itself bothered me. And the all caps. I've never cared much for the bitching-about-my-reviews attitude some writers have, so maybe that's it. I don't know.

Oh I know. I was thinking of the people who were replying to you but I didn't feel like replying to all of them. Sorry.

Non-consensual = non-con = rape, was my immediate thought process.

When non-consensual is used in fandom, it almost always refers to rape. Even if it didn't, non-consensual as a label does imply some level of personal violation, which is a stupid thing to say about literary criticism.

My first thought was that the fic author was referring to non-consensual beta as in like a/b/o. I'm still confused.

LOL. Gotta love the people who scream 'troll' whenever you dare to give some criticism to someone.

That is actually hilarious.

And a good sign to avoid their fic (unless it's a joke, in which case, it's a recommendation).
