I have two:

1. Why is liking gen fic over romance considered weird? I'm sorry that I perceive characters as they are in canon. I don't give a damn about your pairing so please shut the hell up and stop trying to get me to ship characters!

2. People who claim that rodeos glorify animal cruelty. If you actually knew fuck all about it then you would know that (barring Mexico and a few other countries) stock contractors and the competitors take better care of their animals than they do themselves. Especially the professional, year-round competitors 'cause guess what? They don't have a back-up job. If their horse isn't in top form, they don't win, they don't win and then they're fucked. The same pretty much goes for stock contractors too. If they don't put out good stock, word gets out and they lose contracts. No contracts = no money = a shit ton of unpaid bills. Or the people that call someone a horrible parent for letting their child ride steers. It's statistically proven that (going out of every hundred kids) a child is more likely to be injured playing football than steer riding. If you don't like rodeo, that's fine. If you started making a bunch of unfounded assumptions and being condescending to everyone in that lifestyle? Bitch, run.

(I've officially shed my lurker status, yay! Also, I'm Canadian so this isn't some southern red neck rant just in case you were wondering.)

So agreed about rodeos. Also dog sledding. Those animals are treated like top athletes and are how those places make money, so of course they're treated well. There are exceptions, but they're not the rule.

Continuing along the same vein, it bugs me how, in regards to any horse-related activity, outsiders who've maybe read one article about how some people use abusive training methods in this one discipline will automatically assume that everyone who participates in that discipline is abusive towards their horses. No, not all dressage riders use Rollkur, not everyone who owns or even shows Tennessee Walkers practices soring, not all racehorses who can't race anymore are sent straight to the slaughterhouse (though that does still happen disturbingly often) and not every barrel racer does that awful, constant flappy-kick with their long pointy spurs while constantly whipping each flank with the crop in their spare hand. Leaving aside the obvious pain this causes the horse, this is also frowned upon because that's a really stupid way to ride, as you'd actually be hindering the horse and constantly getting in his/her way and exposing yourself as a rank beginner who has no business competing until you've completed at least three more months of solid training. But I digress. It's really annoying that every equestrian in every discipline gets tarred with the same brush as the abusers.

Exactly, horse trainers like that suck. They do nothing but instill fear in the horse rather than trust which is what you need to have a good, steadfast horse. Though, as far as I know, pointed spurs are no longer allowed in most rodeos.

Another problem is when someone decides "hey, this horse is pretty so I'm going to buy it" then drops the poor animal like a hot rock when they realize how much work you have to put in to caring for them. a lot of people don't realise how high maintenance some breeds are. That or they buy a horse way above their riding level.
