Historical fantasy adaptations are a thing. In theory, I don't see anything wrong with creating a fictional, fantastic story out of real events. And while I didn't like 47 Ronin, on a quality scale, it beat the hell out of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

...I had no idea that there was fantasy involved. I honestly thought it was just that Reeves guy and poorly considered history, a la The Last Samurai.

Just watch the trailer! It has a dragon in it. That was the point I realized this wasn't a straight adaptation and so became totally onboard with the whole thing. (I became less so upon actually seeing it.)

Japan does this kind of stuff all the time -- Sengoku Basara, anyone? -- so I don't hold it against Hollywood for giving it a go. Too bad it wasn't a good go.

For whatever reason, I find the Japanese tendency to go all out and offend as many people as possible with their media adaptations to be endearing.

...Although I still can't figure out why the Judeo-Christian God might hate Soul Reapers in Bleach.

They don't really offend anyone except of bunch of irrelevant, oversensitive feminists who don't know what common sense is.

Wow, no. Get out of here. Bad Fido.

...what do feminists have to do with the current villain in Bleach?

The point I realised it wasn't a straight adaptation was the point I decided it wasn't for me.

Good for you: why don't you go see Thor, now there's a 'straight' adaptation of the myth (or comics) instead?

Or 'The Monuments Men' another straight adaptation of history?

Or (insert any Hollywood movie here), all gloriously 'straight' adaptations of myths/legends/books/whatever... Good luck, and have fun!

I don't expect Marvel movies to even be exactly like the comics. The comics have such a huge backstory it's hard for an outsider to get into them, so the movies have to be a reboot.

I didn't expect Thor to be like the myths because it was based on the comics. I didn't expect it to be exactly like the comics for reason of expecting a reboot.

I don't expect a lot of Hollywood adaptions to stay exactly the same, but there is a stage where the alterations become ridiculous, and putting magic in a story that is basically politics and samurai honour and revenge, that hit me wrong.

Or in other words, I would have liked to see a movie about politics, samurai honour, and revenge, without the magic.
