What bugs me about this type of logic

(Anonymous) 2014-04-13 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
First of all is the absolute that people who get trolled (which in my mind is equal to being bullied) did something to deserve it. I have definitely seen trolls jump on people for nothing before. Secondly is the idea that the trolling victims must take responsibility for their actions yet you don't seem to think the same of the ones doing the trolling.

Like I mostly agree with you with taking responsibility, not using a disorder or disease as an excuse, and all that stuff. But it just seems that people ignore trolls and bullies and like to blame the victim by saying that they deserved the treatment and should not be getting upset over the trolling.

It's the same kind of advice they give you in school, the whole "well what did you do to garner their attention?" and "just ignore them and they'll go away" advice for bullying that never ever works.

Yeah but if you want trolls to leave you alone, you're gonna have to take some measures. Not as penance, but more like pest control. Because it's not like there's a troll police, and a lot of trolls tend to be anonymous. I don't think it's the same as in school, because in school there are other people present who could take action (even if a lot of times they fail to)

Trolling and bullying are different. It's so subtle most can't distinguish it. Trolling is (USUALLY) pretty harmless and annoying and it stops if you turn off the computer. It becomes cyberbullying when the target's phone number or address are posted for the harassment to continue offline via phone calls or box floods, or someone hacks their stuff and tries to ruin them.

Trolling is pretty much external and stops once the target stops being funny. Bullying keeps going long after the target moves on.

I don't condone either. I'm all for calling out someone that's acting like an idiot. I kind of draw the line when the calling out turns into dogpiling and harassment.

Sad to say a majority of people who do get trolled online did something to cause drama. The trollers aren't any more in the right either. Nobody wins.

I've been bullied and I've been trolled.

Bullying left me with a concussion.

Trolling left me with eyestrain after I rolled my eyes too hard.

There is no comparison.

Thank you. Trolling can be easily dealt with by just closing the browser window and walking away. Bullying isn't anywhere near that simple.

Honest question: what makes you think I give a flying fuck? Seriously, who are you that I should care what you think of me? As far as I know, you're just Stalker-Anon, who follows me around and tells me how terribad I am. What are you to me, that I should care at all about your opinion?

4 sentences asking why they think I should. I'm genuinely curious about their answer.

Are you implying that bullying has to be physical?

That last piece of advice worked for me, actually. Took some time, but it worked.
