I read something interesting recently. So, Japan was, up until recently, the second biggest "movie market" in the world (recently beat out by China). Besides the US, of course. Anyway, Japan is still huge in the market for even Hollywood movies. So many movies, especially recently, have been trying to incorporate Japanese actors and Japan/Japanese culture to appeal to Japanese viewers and keep that market. Hence Pacific Rim, Wolverine, etc.

But Japan doesn't really respond positively, as one might expect. Not because they are offended or whatever, just that they would rather watch Western movies. (Of course, they make their own movies, too, which cover Japanese actors and stories, but as far as Hollywood goes, they want to see Johnny Depp, not so much their actors)

Of course that's a generalization, but it was an interesting article.

Japan was the second? That's surprising. I would've thought Korea or India were the second biggest.

Yeah I'm surprised too. Japan's quite a small country.

That's because Japan likes to keep its potatoes separate from its peas. Close, but not quite touching. It's no longer some shiny, interesting foreign thing once you start incorporating actual Japanese people/culture into it.

Personally, I quite like this movement, though. I know several of the Japanese actors in 47 Ronin really enjoy acting in Hollywood/foreign movies, and I think it is, if nothing else, a positive step towards hiring more Asian-American (or just Asian) actors in general.

That's cool with me. I like being ~exotic~.
