Re: Anyone have any unusual hobbies?

Not strictly a hobby, but every time I mention that I'm a Viking death metal enthusiast, I get some weird looks and 'YOU like that stuff?'

A huge part of that reaction is because I apparently look and dress like I should be listening to Justin Beiber. I find this hysterical.

I get some weird looks for liking metal too. Apparently I look like a hippie. My girlfriend and I were waiting for the bus the other day and this guy comes up and tells us we remind him of Woodstock.

Got any good Viking metal recs?

Amon Amarth is my standard for good Viking death metal. I had a professor in school who would ask a different person what music he should play before class started. When he got to me, I told him to find some Amon Amarth and crank up the volume. I think I scared some people.

Tyr is also good. Enisferum is great.

Alestorm is Pirate death metal. They're a tad more tongue in cheek, but they're a lot of fun.

Cool thanks! The only one I already know is Alestorm and I agree with your assessment of them.

"Deaththroes of the Terror Squid" is the best song name ever.

Agreed. I kind of want to write a story based on that. Oh the fun I could have describing something called "the terror squid".

Can you put warrior mermaids in this story? There is a dearth of hardcore mermaid cultures in fiction. They could battle the Terror Squid.

Hmm, I've actually been looking for another angle for one of my mermaid ideas and that could work...

The warriors used shave their heads so it can't get caught in ocean debris. Over time, this tradition fell by the wayside, although the elders never have hair. They use materials salvaged from shipwrecks to make their armor. Scars are seen as honorable; you gave blood to defend Delmaria. Those who dishonor their companies are thrown in the arena, where they battle sharks, and sometimes each other, to the death. Ala the Sacred Band of Thebes, same-sex coupling is not only permitted, but encouraged. Women may be warriors and have the power to vote, own property, divorce, and hold public office. Since the ocean is cold, merfolk tend to weigh more than humans.

Blergh, that's the worst. People seem to think that everyone that's into metal either looks like this, or is a dude. It's pretty annoying.

It used to irritate me, but now I just sit back and smile.

That guy you linked to looks like he's wondering what he'll have for breakfast.

Hello, fellow Viking metal fan!

I dress like a hippie, so I guess people expect me to be into New Age music or the sort of soft rock indie crap that's so popular these days. No thanks. Give me growled vocals and epic guitar solos and I'm happy.

Growled voices make me growl and grin. I also like Beauty and the Beast vocals. The dichotomy always makes the individual lyrics so much more powerful.

Viking metal has some great music videos as well. Have you seen Amon Amarth's stuff? It looks better than some Hollywood flicks.
