Re: Death Note

Yeah, Near and Mello were really subpar imo. I know they had their fans, but I feel like they dragged the series to a slightly more immature level? It's like the author was trying to take L's weirdness and recreate it in two. But L is so interesting because you never quite knew if the act was total bullshit, if he wasn't quite all there, or if he was totally there and just trying to put you on edge/off guard/whatever.

And Light knew that he was only motivated around L, just as the readers knew. He kept L in the series through random memories, but it just didn't transfer to Near and Mello for me. They seemed too juvenile and obnoxious, idk.

Mikami and Ryuk were flawless, though. I could never tell if I liked Light's death because it fit the narrative or hated it because I liked Light's character and it was such a pathetic death. The anime gave him a little more dignity in how he died, but cut the flashback of Light and Ryuk talking about how there is no heaven or hell, and death is simply nothingness, which I think is philosophically important to the narrative.

Apparently I still have a lot of feelings, even this many years later, lol
