Please, get off your high horse. The Japanese themselves love taking historical people and events and working them into works of fiction in often totally ridiculous and over-the-top ways.

See: Sengoku Basara, Peacemaker Kurogane, Samurai Deeper Kyo, Samurai Warriors, Hakuouki, Sengoku Otome, Seven Souls in the Skull Castle, Harukanaru Toki no Naka de, Nobunagun, Nobunaga the Fool, and too many other things to name.

So... old anime, huh? Yeah, that's exactly the same genre. Comparing anime to live action is like comparing apples and oranges.

I'm not saying that your initial point is wrong, but you're wrong to assume that there's a high horse involved, rather than personal preferences... namely, my own. And I'd prefer to see something based on the history. Saying "THE JAPANESE DO IT, YOU NON-ANIME MONSTER!" is in no way persuasive to me, a person who wanted to see a vaguely historically accurate movie and decided that nope, this was not it.

Seven Souls in the Skull Castle is live-action and was released just last year, actually, so it's neither old nor anime.

And there is a high horse involved when you word things like "...You do realize that the 47 Ronin was an actual, historical thing that really happened?"

Yes, it was historical. That doesn't mean that people can't make fantasy adaptations of it, that other people can't enjoy those adaptations, and that the people who do enjoy them aren't aware of the fact that it was based on history.
