This is why everyone makes fun of tags these days.

If a story has a lot of bullshit tags, I won't read it. Especially if they have Tumblr style tags. Tags are for indexing not conversations.

A way to filter out stories that have stuff I'm not interested in, that is how I like to use them. It doesn't matter how many cute games the author plays with tags, I just want to dodge OCs and Pedo/12yr old shipping stories. It is getting harder and harder to do that for some reason.

IDK, I guess it depends on the fandom. Where I lurk, tumblr-style tags are no indication of the quality OR the contents of the work. They show that the author knows fuck all about tagging, but that's about it.

I hate Tumblr-style tags on AO3 so much oh my god. Pretty much a definite red light for me unless the fic comes highly recced from people I trust.

I was just discussing this with a friend. Nothing turns me off faster than tumblr tagging your fic on AO3. There was a particularly egregious example where the author's tags, due to the way the spacing works on AO3, ended up being longer than the fic (which was a drabble). I ended up turning off my computer for the night.

The first time I found a tag tuned me off a fic (rather than being an intentional warning), was "Character of Color" on a Static Shock fic. The only thing this tells me about your fic is that everything in your fic is gonna be about politics: it'll have a politically charged plot, a politically charged relationship, a politically charged background and the whole reason for the fic to exist is as an exposé of your political views and how PC and awesome you are.

Sorry, not interested.

That would actually be useful in terms of finding fic though (for someone who *was* into that), unlike some ridiculously specific ones.
