Re: Fantasy/sci-fi book recommendation?
(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 12:28 am (UTC)(link)I'll scrounge around in my Amazon wish list and try to come up with some other recs :) Would love any of your recs as well!
Re: Fantasy/sci-fi book recommendation?
(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 12:33 am (UTC)(link)Ooh, I did read The Name of the Wind, but I haven't read the second one yet. Is it good?
My recs? Hmm, I quite liked Katherine Kerr's Deverry series. It's very layered, jumping around in patches here and there of the same characters in different reincarnations. Kind of confused at first, but it's interesting how it all comes together over the course of the series.
Re: Fantasy/sci-fi book recommendation?
(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 12:38 am (UTC)(link)Thanks for the recommendation!
Re: Fantasy/sci-fi book recommendation?
(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 01:02 am (UTC)(link)Oh man, I read the Deverry series way back when. I think I stopped somewhere around 3 books from the end.
But if you like confusingly interweaving plots that come to a decent pay off, I can rec that. Be warned, these tend towards doorstoppers.
The big one is A Song of Ice and Fire, aka Game of Thrones. I figure you've probably heard of it.
I really enjoyed the Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson. The first book is Gardens of the Moon, although I've heard people recommend starting with Deadhouse Gates (2nd book), then going back to Gardens of the Moon later. The main series is 10 (huge!) books, but it's finished. There are some side story novellas and short stories, which may still be ongoing, but they're not necessary to the main plot.
I also just finished book 2 of Brandon Sanderson's epic fantasy series The Stormlight Archive. The first one is called Way of Kings, and it definitely has a lot of layered plotting going on. Be warned, there's at least 5 books planned for the series, and only the first 2 are out. But Sanderson does some of the best worldbuilding and magic systems I've ever seen.
Re: Fantasy/sci-fi book recommendation?
(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 01:28 am (UTC)(link)I tried A Song of Ice and Fire, but didn't much care for it - maybe the atmosphere was a bit too grim without much payoff for me? But I've had Brandon Sanderson recommended before, and have not read anything by him yet, so I went ahead and just found a cheap Kindle version on Amazon of one of the books! Thanks for the rec, I've been meaning to check out one of his books for awhile but just keep forgetting to actually look into it! Thanks. :D
