I think a lot of it is that tumblr's userbase is younger and sorting out their sexuality and who they are and ape the labels around them. It always been the way in fandom, but the addition of social justice to it has resulted in messes like this.

It sounds like some great sage sitting on a mountain somewhere, cheerfully smoking something mildly mind-altering and contemplating the idiots making a mess of things far beneath them, and only stopping every so often to pointedly re-educate the nice men who'd like to forcibly convince them to intervene.
