I was going through that realization at like age 20. My dad tells me I was born old. :(

Same, OP. I think it's just a natural part of growing older and realizing that maybe I was sometimes an insufferable brat as a teen. Not as bad as some, but there are things that I thought were "OMG SO UNFAIR!!!!!" that I see in a different light now. That's not necessarily a bad thing, though. It'd be weird to be in my 30s but with the exact same mindset and attitudes as a 14 year old.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-14 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been feeling that way for years and I'm only in my 20s. Although tbh I already felt like that sometimes when I was a teenager and my friends bitched about their parents, and I had to pull myself together not to say "your parents are right, stop being a childish whiny shit".

(Anonymous) 2014-04-14 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I must have been old since I was a little kid, because I can remember being very young, watching movies about children/teenagers ~rebelling against the evil adults~ and thinking "No wait, your parents/teachers/etc. actually have a good point."

(Anonymous) 2014-04-14 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder how often you disagree with the parents. I know this doesn't apply to a majority of people, but my parents are emotionally abusive and I rant about them on Tumblr quite a bit. I know that even when talking to somebody who knows my parents, they fail to see how the situation is abusive (save for my psychiatrist), so I worry that strangers on Tumblr will think the same as you do about me and my parents.

I hear ya. I often feel the same way, OP.

It doesn't help that I've spent my entire adult life teaching college students. So I was already having the feelings you're describing at 22 as a graduate student instructor. LOL

That being said, I think it's important to remember that parents aren't always right as the anon upthread with abusive parents mentions and that youth does not always mean immaturity while age does not always guarantee wisdom.

I've always been like that since I was a kid. My peers would always come whining to me for sympathy and I would always end up shooting them down. "Oh, my parents won't let me do such and such." "Yeah, 'cause it's illegal." "Oh, my parents won't let me go out with such and such." "Yeah, 'cause he's coked up loser who will get you in trouble."

I never had the mentality of, "Hah! That will never happen to me." It was the opposite. "Oh, Christ, that's going to happen to me if I do that, isn't it?"

(Anonymous) 2014-04-14 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Or maybe stop following teenagers? I'm serious what is with people complaining about their dashboards when THEY are the ones that followed those people. You don't have to follow people that follow you. No one will care if you unfollow people that are bugging you. Or hell get xkit and mute the text posts of people that are complaining about their parents.

I understand that feeling. Lately, whenever I see or hear a teenager being whiny and/or pretentious all I want to do is condescend to them. Baby-talk, cheek-pinching, hair-mussing and all.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I realize that when I see dead serious About Me pages like this

"My name is Vi. I am a white, genderqueer pomosexual nearing the end of my eighteenth Earth orbit of existence outside of the womb. However, this does not denote the reality of who I am; this is merely trivial information about my classifications.

Who I am is a distant tempest, passively passionate, fire burning within a hermetic ice sculpture. I am the invisibly thin rapier with the most embellished guard. I am the skeletal hand, bleached from the decay of society, fragile and frightening, solid and seemly, pointing my sharp, white bones at the blackened hearts of our patriarchal leaders. I will have mellow and mighty dominion."

Dude, I can't even legally drink yet and I'm old.

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-04-15 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm in college, I live with my father, and I still regularly interact with my family, argue with them, etc. So basically, I'm "the kid".

But already, for years I've been increasingly siding with "the grown-ups" when listening to my peers' family problems. Like, seriously, the amount of times I see people my age - fucking college kids - complain about how oppressive and unfair and tyrannical their parents are for cutting down (not cutting off, mind you, just cutting down) their Internet access when their grades started to slip... -_-

No, idiot, it is not unreasonable or abusive for your parents to make your fucking allowance contingent on completing a few chores around the house, especially when your own damn post makes it obvious that most of those chores amount to you cleaning up after your own damn self. Hell, I was thinking this back in middle school, and the fact there are high school kids - a year or less away from being legal adults - who still think like this boggles my mind. The one or two college kids like this make me want to give up on humanity.

Probably one of the most irritating this mentality is when one of these people tried to make it out like my own family situation is oppressive. Fuck you, asshole, my dad is not unfair for not giving me much cash for a few months after he gave me a big lump sum for my birthday, even if he could technically afford it. It's called "learning out how budget". And apparently I have Stockhold Syndrome because I prefer to earn as much of my hand money as I can before asking my family for cash, instead of asking them first when I know that they'll give me what they can. Did it occur to you that the reason they are so generous is because I don't ask if I can help it?

*descends into incoherent and admittedly irrational rage*
