Re: Dude, I can't even legally drink yet and I'm old.

You sound like me when I was younger. I worked at a cafe during my college years, and I remember my manager looking at me one day and saying, "you are a 19-year-old curmudgeon."

Grant you, I tended to surround myself with like-minded people, so I only knew a few folks my age who thought I was weird or who held attitudes that struck me as immature. But the ones who were immature? Oh my goodness. I had one friend who, when she was told that she would have to start paying for her apartment by herself, behaved as if her entire world was ending. We had friends who had been living on on their own and paying their own way since they were 17, and here she was, 23, freaking out and crying about how "hard" things now were for her.

And that brings me to this: there's a pretty strong correlation, it seems to me, between how early one is given responsibility and how quickly one matures. But, eh, I digress.

Anyway, from one "old soul" to another, I feel ya.

This makes me worry for the friends of mine who come from actually oppressive and conservative families - a lot of my female friends with conservative families are highly taken care of but also have little to no personal freedom, and their families' mentalities is that as long as these girls are under the family's roof, they will be treated like little girls (even in their early 20's)...but that means they have little to no practice for when they leave, and their families may not be the most supportive once they do. It's setting them up for disaster, and given this was almost exactly my mom's situation, I know all too well that this sort of upbringing can take decades to recover from/learn from. D:
