this character and the ship that goes with it seem like they would be right up my alley but somehow i can't bring myself to care, because he was in like 10 minutes tops out of the 60+ minutes of the movie. hell, he's not even the main antagonist of the movie, pierce is. idek why the movie is named after bucky because it doesn't feel like it's his movie at all.

I keep seeing your last argument around, and it makes no sense to me. Were people upset that the title of the first Harry Potter was Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone? I mean, the Sorcerer's Stone is there for like...under ten pages?

It isn't about amount of time, or antagonists, or whatever. Bucky was... I don't know, the driving force of Steve's character arc, and so on.

SPOILERS for CAP II

This. Bucky was the conflict for Steve. I mean, we all knew he was going to save the day and take down SHIELD. There was no will he or won't he. But him having to go against his best friend is interesting. Their relationship is interesting. Their interactions are interesting.

that's an imperfect comparison though, because the philosopher's stone is an object, not a character. in the two (iirc) hp books named after characters, prisoner of azkaban and the half blood prince, those characters play a central part in the story.

i didn't have the same experience at all when watching the movie. i didn't think bucky was the driving force of steve's character arc; the concept of civil rights and freedom and privacy and his conflicting thoughts about what he's done for s.h.i.e.l.d felt more important to me.

He stole the movie in every scene he appeared in, so even though Pierce was ostensibly the main villain, it felt like the Soldier's film to me.

Hell, I didn't even know the guy's name was Pierce until now. He was just some boring, power hungry villain that is in every superhero movie. Bucky was menacing (helped along by the music that plays for him) and conflicted. I agree that he stole the every scene he was in.

Omg his theme music was TERRIFYING.
D:
I saw cap 2 twice, and everytime it played I instanly got chills.

I have been listening to the OST on repeat at work.

His theme music was creepy and eery in the best of ways. :D

I cared about Pierce because Robert Redford, but all those tight shots on Bucky's masked face drove him out my mind in those scenes. And I really, really didn't want to fall into Steve/Bucky but oops. They made it too hard to resist.

... I'm glad I'm not the only one. I saw the movie on release night (well, evening; my local theatre was playing a double feature with the first movie that started at around 5pm; since my partner and I both very much regretted not being able to see Cap1 on the big screen, we were really happy about this!) and I didn't catch his name at all. It took me a stupidly long time to realize that the comments here about Pierce were talking about the bad guy. *embarrassed*

that's kinda subjective though, isn't it? i didn't have the same experience at all

(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
And that is why I said "to me".

i was referring to the first part of your comment, "He stole the movie in every scene he appeared in"

(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Two disclaimers of subjectivity seem really redundant for a one-sentence reply.

i thought it only applied to the second part, sorry about that. english works in mysterious ways.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know why it matters since you didn't specify that the movie didn't feel like Bucky's in your opinion either. In these conversations, we should just operate with the understanding that it's all subjective.

He really did stole the movie, and mind that he almost never even fucking talks! I think that was amazing... he got some of the best OST a character could get, a fantastic entrance, a wonderful costume, and Cap going gay for him.

Well damn, I think he did a lot in those 10 minutes he was in.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with you. I see the potential for Bucky/Steve, possibly, down the road, but for that movie? My ship was Sam/Steve. Bucky was barely in it and he was brainwashed the entire time. (Which works well for a villain; I thought he was a good antagonist. I just didn't see him as part of a ship for that movie. Obviously I'm in the minority.) Maybe the next film he is in I'll end up shipping him with Steve.

feels good to see i'm not the only one. i kinda ship sam/steve too, now that i think about it. i can see it, in a friends to lovers kind of way. in any case they had many more scenes than bucky/steve, and great scenes too! even without shipping in mind i loved their camaderie.

I saw them as the ultimate brOTP really, but maybe because they reminded me a lot of Mr. Incredible and Frozone from The Incredibles? Their chemistry was amazing though, but I always got the feeling that Steve would choose BFF Bucky over Sam. I think that whole, "you can punch me until I die because we're in this together Bucky" thing sealed the deal for me.

But I do want to read all of the Sam/Steve friendship fics. ALL OF THEM. Because really, that was some amazing chemistry.

This is an introducion to the character. It's something that happens in tv episodes quite often, and I'm starting to consider Marvel movies like a super long endless show.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
No, I agree with this. I was actually surprised at how little Bucky was actually in it. Yes, he had a presence throughout, but I felt like the SHIELD/HYDRA storyline was the primary storyline, and his was the secondary storyline. I was surprised that the movie ended like it did as far as his story went. I was expecting it to go further. And now with Avengers 2 up next before CA3, I'm not sure what's happening there. Is it going to be touched on in Avengers 2, or is it just going to be ignored until CA3?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
this. especially since Bucky was so poorly written in WS. he doesn't say anything! he's a cipher! he has virtually no real interaction with Cap.

it probably didn't help he was either masked or looked like a reject from the Cure.

I was so disappointed. I had such hopes.
