Favorite SPN season

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone at Mark Spoils is shitting themselves because "OMG, HE'S AT SEASON 4 SQUEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!" and all I can think is how hilarious it's going to be if he doesn't think its the best thing ever.

I like what season 4 brings to the table mytharc-wise (and Cas), but it's just so dark and grim. So much so that I really noticed the string of lighter, gimmicky episodes in season 5 to make up for it (Old!Dean, Caught In a TV Show, Evil Ghandi/James Dean/Paris Hilton/Abraham Lincoln wax museum doppelganger, Meta Fan Convention just to mis-name a few). Plus I remain not a fan of New Ruby.

But to answer my own question, I think my favorite season is a toss up between one and five (have only seen half of S6 and nothing else). In One, the stadalones were fun, the arc was good, and we hadn't yet gotten to the round robin of soul-selling and single tears. And Five is just where everything comes to a head, I love Mark Pellegrino, I like what was going on with the arc, even though I do find the last-minute Adam replacement kind of dumb, and it was a good mix of light and dark episodes. But some of the SPN tropes were getting a little old.

As for S6, I'm actually liking Soulless Sam (but I have memories of that not being a fan-favorite arc). I just finished the "alien abductions" episode and thought it was mostly funny.

Five is probably my favorite. I think four has a really nice opening and closing episode, but five has all my favorite characters (Castiel) getting more screen time.

+1

S5 really was the best of the lot. I doubt they'll ever equal it.

3 because of Dean's deal and all that. Everything else pales in comparison.

He will think it's the best thing ever. That's part of his process now.

That said, personally, it's between 1 and 5 as well. I really like the standalone episodes as well and 5 probably has the most / best Bobby episodes and Bobby is the best character on the show so

I really love S5 because I loved the apocalypse storyline. I loved Lucifer, and the horsemen, and all the various meddling angels, and all the little close-knit "found family" moments with Bobby and Cas and that one time they all sat around with Ellen and Jo laughing and talking, and all those kinda ridiculous but still funny episodes scattered here and there to keep things light. Swan Song is also probably one of my favorite episodes ever.
(I'm also one of those people that believe the show should have ended there.)

I really like S3 too, but I feel like it could have been even better if they hadn't had to work around the whole strike.

My favorite will always be 2, although I also really enjoy 1 and 3. I don't know, 2 just worked for me as far as individual episodes went.

1&2, because I actually liked the episodic format and anybody dying and the drama between the boys wasn't at their height yet. (I also think it has some of the most coherent and interesting episodes).

Also the world still seemed whole.

+1. I really liked those first two seasons, where you're learning and discovering the characters, and they haven't turned into caricatures of themselves. I also liked the monster of the week. I think that the "Bigger & Badder Apocalypse(s)!" of season 4 onwards tend to get repetitive, and suffer from the attempt to outdo the last apocalypse. Also, the mythology begins to get muddled when the angels & demons come out to play.

Definitely feel like 1, 2, and 3 were the high points.

Season 5, definitely.

I haven't bothered to watch past that because it feels like the show has ended there.

I think S4 was probably one of the most tightly plotted arcs, and it had Uriel, who is one of my favourite characters ever. S5 lost the tightness a bit and slopped around the place some, but it had some really, really good moments, and I tend to think the show stopped there because Swan Song just makes sense to me as an ending. That said, I also loved S1 & S2, mostly because I like monster-of-the-week and they hadn't quite hit the stupid levels of angst yet.

Um. Okay. I like S1-S5 as a contained story, I tend to ignore after that. Within those, I'll probably pick S4 as my favourite, though it didn't contain my favourite episodes, because the overall arc felt consistent to me and because I loved Uriel and Cas' arc that season.

Season 5 narrowly edges out Season 4 for me. The whole family and friendship theme, the night off and the group photo, Castiel really coming into his own as a character, Gabriel, Lucifer, the Cupid, the Endverse, Zachariah's career issues, Chuck-as-God, Crowley's and Death's introductions, Sam growing up and out of his temper, Swan Song--it was just so crammed full of awesome I can't even express it.

OTOH, Season 4 had Anna, who is my enduring favorite character after Cas, and I'm one of those oddballs who really liked Gen's Ruby. Also, 'On the Head of a Pin' would have carried the whole season by itself IMO, but we also got 'Lazarus Rising' and 'Yellow Fever' and 'The Rapture' and 'I Know What You Did/Heaven and Hell.'

Apart from those two seasons it gets harder for me to rank them. Season 6 overall was a letdown, but it did have some real gems (Soulless!Sam was painful in terms of what it did to Sam's character, but the writing for him taken by itself was hilarious, and 'Weekend at Bobby's', Balthazar, and 'The Man Who Would Be King' redeemed a lot of the season's weaknesses IMO.) A lot of my other favorite eps were scattered throughout Seasons 2 and 3, but Bela Talbot and the writer's strike put a damper on 3 as a whole for me, sadly.

From S7 on I've mostly liked characters, scenes or concepts as opposed to episodes or the season as a whole. Charlie, Garth, Benny, the Trans, the Men of Letters and the bunker, some of the additional angel and demon lore, Meg's character development and a few other items have been cool and good fodder for roleplay, but nothing that's rivaled S5 and S4.
