Hans Zimmer is probably my favorite composer. And Gladiator's OST is in my top 5 favorites. I can't really think of a Thomas Newman soundtrack I like though. Hrm.

And yes Morricone has some great tracks (though I have not listened to a lot of his music).

Skyfall and American Beauty come to mind. Road to Perdition, Wall-E too. He's very uplifting, even when sad.

Hans Zimmer blew my mind with Gladiator, then was hit and miss for a while (at least for me), 'cause I thought he was starting to recycle himself a bit, but now seems to be in great shape once again. I also loved Rush's OST just to say one of the more recent of him I recall.

I agree about Hans Zimmer. Some of the Pirate of the Caribbean's songs sound like Gladiator songs (enough that I sometimes get them confused). But his Batman trilogy music is amazing.
