it has nothing to do with "owing" anyone anything, though, it's about basic courtesy. if someone were to compliment you on your haircut, you wouldn't ignore them, would you? probably not, because that's rude. the polite thing to do is thank them.

If someone complimented me on my haircut, I'd say thank you.

If someone spent 700 words complimenting my haircut, I'd run as fast as humanly possible in the opposite direction, because that is the definition of overinvestment.

A novel is way more work than an haircut. Anyone who is weirded out about a small 700 word review has problems.
