Nature vs. nuture

There are a lot of things we don't understand about why a person is the way they are, especially those that commit horrible acts. I believe that someone who has had a good childhood can still turn out to be a horrible person and that someone who has had a horrible childhood can absolutely be a good person. But I also think that there's some correlation between a bad childhood and doing horrible things - someone who's low on empathy would probably be more likely to do horrible things if they had a bad childhood.

I've never watched the show, but the commercials make me feel like there's something creepy with their relationship (of course, commercials can be deceiving it might all be coming from Norman). And a parent can be unintentionally bad - in trying to do the right thing, the best thing for their child, they can do something that damages their child in some way that may not be immediately evident.
