It's NORMA FUCKING BATES.

They aren't going to end this with her being good.

except in the show there's more to norman's mental problems than having a bad mother

Doesn't mean she's gonna be good. Unless they want the show to be worhtless dogshit.

She and Hannibal can open a charity where they provide food shelter socks for the needy.

I'm so behind on this season, but what problems do people have with Norma? I'm not familiar with Psycho beyond the film, and even that...it's been a long, long time since I watched it.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, but canon or not, Norma Bates is Norma Bates. If she's not evil in SOME way, there is no point to her character. It would be like a non-canon pre-prequel to Star Wars that was all about how young Senator Palpatine was an okay guy. Just because it's non-canon doesn't mean the original has literally no intertextual significance. Otherwise they might as well have written a show that had absolutely nothing to do with Psycho apart from having a mother and a son and a hotel.

You can be a flawed mother without being evil.

I don't watch the show (though I do know the movie quite well), but I don't think it's necessarily right that she would have to be evil exactly, just that Norman somehow would have to perceive her that way. If the show is taking the position that Norman has serious issues (schizophrenia, for example?), then it's possible that he might be perceiving and responding to her treatment of him in a way that differs from her actual actions and intentions - or that he has delusions of her that he can't separate from the reality. Especially since, as others have said, you can be a flawed/oppressive parent without being an evil one.

Like I said, I haven't seen the show, but I could see how a not-completely awful mother could be done. Potentially.

I never thought I'd see the day where there would be Norma Bates stans, lol.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Let me guess, you don't watch the show and are just judging her from the movies?

And the book? No, seriously, the book is pretty clear. She was not a good mother!

Well there are Governor stans from The Walking Dead, so I'm not surprised.

Loki would be a better example.

Well, come on, it's going to be pretty hard to separate this interpretation of the relation from the baggage of Psycho. Obviously.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Perhaps but they've done a good job at desconstructing expectations so far.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not judging her from the movies or the books or anything like that, I'm judging her strictly from the TV series. And she's definitely a shitty mom.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
lmao this, seriously, I'd be calling CPS on her if I knew her in real life.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yep.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
+1

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. She's known that he's been blacking out for a while, and she's subtly manipulating him as it suits her. The way she unloaded that her brother raped her minutes before his prom date showed up; more recently when she lets him get all the way to the driver's test seat and then pulls him out of the car. When the school required him to go to a therapist, and she talked over him for the session ...

Further down someone talked about how she's got codependency issues, and I agree. I don't know that she's always aware of the fact that she's not behaving like a normal parent - like the nuzzling/cuddling they do, but she doesn't have to be cognizant of it to make it emotionally manipulative and crappy parenting.

Nature vs. nuture

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
There are a lot of things we don't understand about why a person is the way they are, especially those that commit horrible acts. I believe that someone who has had a good childhood can still turn out to be a horrible person and that someone who has had a horrible childhood can absolutely be a good person. But I also think that there's some correlation between a bad childhood and doing horrible things - someone who's low on empathy would probably be more likely to do horrible things if they had a bad childhood.

I've never watched the show, but the commercials make me feel like there's something creepy with their relationship (of course, commercials can be deceiving it might all be coming from Norman). And a parent can be unintentionally bad - in trying to do the right thing, the best thing for their child, they can do something that damages their child in some way that may not be immediately evident.

So . . . wait. If the show isn't following the movie, what exactly is it basing the story on?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
1. Psycho is the inspiration for Bates Motel, but the movie isn’t the series’ bible. “The idea of doing a contemporary prequel made it clear that what we were doing was something that was inspired by Psycho, but not an homage to Psycho. And that was a big difference to us,” says Cuse.

“We just wanted to sort of take these characters and the setup as inspiration,” he later adds. “So, no, we don't really view any of [the original movie and its remakes and previous adaptations] as canon. And, in fact, the mythology that you think is what dictates the relationship between Norma and Norman is probably not what it's going to turn out to be.”

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
No, she's objectively a bad mom. Norman's problems may not have entirely to do with her, but her child needs mental help and at this point should probably be in a hospital because he is a danger to himself and others. (And Norma knows that.) But Norma is codependent and can't function without Norman around, so that's not going to happen. She's being selfish and putting her needs above Norman's, which makes her a bad mom.

And I say this all as someone who never watched the movie and didn't even know there was a book until this secret.
