This. I think if any of the people complaining about a 700 word review had ever gotten a really good, meaty review -- the kind that quotes favorite lines or passages, says what parts were really emotional, and asks questions about intent -- they'd feel differently. It takes a certain kind of fic to inspire a review like that, though, and maybe the people going "nope" just haven't written anything they could see getting a really long review for.

This was my favorite part of your post. It takes a certain kind of writer to be so pretentious.

Do stop using the word "pretentious" as if you know what it means. You are not, surprise, the authority on what writers should want and yes, it really does sound like you are just bitter and envious.

is this a character you are playing or are you actually 13?

What's it like lacking this much self awareness?

DA

I disagree that you sound bitter and envious (you really don't sound like 700 word reviews is something you want at all, ever). However, I agree that maybe you might be a little wrong, and some people like really long reviews?

I've recently spent a little time in fandom reading fics that clock in between 75K and 150K words, including one behemoth that still isn't finished and currently clocks at 637K. They're all that way because the writers are thoughtful and also verbose. I feel like in those fics, as OP argued, 700 words isn't remiss, if they're thoughtful and detailed in their reviews. 5K, 10K, maybe even 15K, and 700 words is a bit of an overreaction. But this comment, for example, is already roughly 130 words. If OP picked four things they liked in a fic, and three or four things they didn't like, and wrote a few sentences about each of them, it would be easy to get up to 700 words for longer works. Then, OP leaves a review every other chapter. Easy. Not an overreaction.

It's more the presumption of it--the idea that you are going to write this very long crit unbidden, and then expect feedback on your feedback. Obviously if you're in a community where that's common it's different, but I don't really see that on say Ao3.

Like I said--too much feedback can be overwhelming. I type up all my comments on term papers (I'm a teaching assistant and this is my job), but I've learned (and been told) that giving THAT much feedback, rather than highlighting just a couple things, is harmful. Now I'm going to assume the person writing 637k stories is pretty damn confident, but a lot of fanfic writers absolutely are not. This can really squash people if, again, it's unbidden.

Then they really shouldn't be posting their fics on the internet. When you post things on a site that allows reviews, you open yourself up to... you got it, reviews. Good, bad, and everything in between.

If they're such a delicate snowflake that getting a lengthy review (which a lot of writers would sacrifice small animals for) makes them panic? They're not ready to be sharing their works with the public.

You tell me.

I think it is more interesting how many people have no idea how short 700 words is. They obviously aren't writers. When you spend a bit of time trying to write drabbles (only 100 words) it becomes quiet obvious as short 700 words really is. Especially on a novel length work.
