I'm kind of amazed by how many people in this thread fail at very basic social skills. Is it really so hard to say 'thank you'? If you can't even do that, you probably shouldn't be posting your writing online for other people to see.

THIS. Seems like an excuse for being indescribably self-involved and rude and citing "an emotional health problem" as an excuse. Get over yourselves and say thank you. It's two freaking words, people. But I expect some "experts" will come along and chide me for not being 'understanding'. Tough.

I don't see what correlation those two things have with each other. Is there a rule? "Must write THIS many thank you notes to post fic"? I've sent in my share of reviews that got no reply so clearly many people don't care about that, and I think that's fine. It's important that I read their fic and they know I liked it, I'm not entitled enough to want them to acknowledge me. Especially when these people get hundreds of comments per chapter; I wouldn't be surprised if they really get overwhelmed and decide to just stay silent.

Yes, thank you, this exactly. Frankly, when I leave a review for someone, it's because I want to let them know how much I appreciated the work they put into providing something that I get to enjoy for free. Being offended that the writer didn't give a "thank you" seems incredibly entitled to me. And the hair cut analogy upstream doesn't sit very well for me, either. When someone gets a hair cut, they do it for themselves, and your compliment is the icing on the cake - hence the 'thank you.' But when you compliment a fic writer, it's because they provided something that you directly benefited from. As far as I'm concerned, I, as the reader, am the one who owes the thanks. Not the writer.
