Well I think the thought process is that you've already pretty much missed the boat on being born a Time Lord, but (if Doctor Who were real) you could always wind up becoming a companion.

There's an element of realism (given that it is still entirely unreasonable and implausible etc etc) - your life could change tomorrow and you'd be wandering the galaxy. That's the appeal.

Maybe they just haven't found the right fob-watch, hmmm?

Course the downside is that they would be wiped out by the reasserting Timelord consciousness, but you can't have everything you know. When you think about it, Doctor Who is kind of an incredibly bleak show really.

That's what's sort of great about it, though. There's this juxtaposition between the surface, which is madcap and kind of silly, and the underlying vein, which is all sorts of dark and depressing.

It's good times.

Sort of.

And then under the dark and depressing bits is the layer of, "don't let the dark and depressing bits of the universe stop you from finding the joy in it." It is an imperfect show, but its philosophy is a beautiful one.

Ah, yes. It does come full-circle, doesn't it? There's beauty even in sadness and madness.

I suppose that's why we all love a good tragedy.

This. It's like 11 year olds waiting around all summer for their Hogwarts letter. Yes, it's completely illogical and there are way cooler fictional things out there, but at the same time, it could happen.

I don't really understand this distinction. DW isn't real, so one's chances of being X imaginary thing or Y imaginary thing is the same. It's like saying oh, I'd love to have magical powers and the ability to turn into an eagle, but that's not realistic so I'll settle for being a horse instead...?
