Well I think the thought process is that you've already pretty much missed the boat on being born a Time Lord, but (if Doctor Who were real) you could always wind up becoming a companion.

There's an element of realism (given that it is still entirely unreasonable and implausible etc etc) - your life could change tomorrow and you'd be wandering the galaxy. That's the appeal.

Course the downside is that they would be wiped out by the reasserting Timelord consciousness, but you can't have everything you know. When you think about it, Doctor Who is kind of an incredibly bleak show really.

This. It's like 11 year olds waiting around all summer for their Hogwarts letter. Yes, it's completely illogical and there are way cooler fictional things out there, but at the same time, it could happen.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really understand this distinction. DW isn't real, so one's chances of being X imaginary thing or Y imaginary thing is the same. It's like saying oh, I'd love to have magical powers and the ability to turn into an eagle, but that's not realistic so I'll settle for being a horse instead...?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe a Classic Who companion, but a Nu Who Companion? No way. You'd have a good chance of ending up trapped in an alternative universe, having your family held hostage for a year no one else knows exists AND have your innocence ruined, have your memories wiped, or end up stuck in 1930's New York City. Nah, I wouldn't want to be a Companion.

(Also see: Why I wouldn't want to be a Hogwarts student. Or a slayer. Or other things fans say they'd love to be even though the series have it that being those things can really, really suck. Yes, I know I'm being way too practical about fantasy!

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Lots of Classic Who companions had it really rough, too. Look at poor Jamie, just for an example.

And Tegan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHjr4JusPA8

Or Peri. She was either shaved bald then mindwiped to let her body be hijacked by an alien (and then her body was slaughtered by Brian Blessed) or she ended up in a marriage of convenience with Brian Blessed.

Being a Hogwarts student wouldn't be too bad as long as you didn't go there at the same time as Harry. You gotta think that was kind of an abnormal situation.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
In terms of fatalities, probably. At least I hope so. But it was still full of lousy teachers and had no humanities classes.

I don't want to be a companion because, on top of having terrible social anxiety and being afraid of pretty much everything, I'm fat and I have a knee injury. I can't run away from anything.

I think I'd rather be a companion than a Hogwarts student, though. The Doctor's idea of trying to keep you safe is, "Everything outside this door wants to kill you. Stick with me, listen to me, and I will do everythign in my power to keep that from happening." Hogwarts' idea of trying to keep you safe is, "Everything outside this door wants to kill you. Good luck with that."

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
This's an interesting thought.
Is it because Hogwarts is just a school with too many people to pay everyone attention individualy? Living in Hogwarts and after finishing it is less personalised and therefore more realistic.
HP world is unsafe in a sense of terrorism times unsafe, whereas DW is more in a dangerouse vacation sense.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Hell yeah! Agreed.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
The fandom gets defensive about something like that? That's so trivial!

That being said, I think I'd rather be a companion than the doctor, simply because the doctor lives too long. And his people are gone too, so that just makes it more horrible. Just thinking about coming back home from an amazing journey and there's no one to welcome you is really upsetting. Or maybe I'm just missing my mom too much right now.

Well being the Doctor is a bit Mary/Marty Sue-ish of you (and frankly given how unbalanced the Doc is, even in the classic series, a bit dubious), but I can understand not wanting to be a companion. I mean, how many of those guys and girls left the Doctor without being mentally scarred (or slammed into a planet) in some way? People in search of a happy ending in the Who-verse ought to hope to be a supporting one-shot character. It is the only safe way to go. It is your fantasy though, if you want to imagine stroking Sexy's console, then go for it.

Which incarnation btw?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I would be a companion for Five on the condition that I could go on only cricket-themed adventures and then peace out when that was over

I mean what's the worst that could happen
skippydelicious: Derp-Derp (Default)

[personal profile] skippydelicious 2014-04-16 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Well you could be abducted by an insane toungeless madman who mistook you for his own true love who just happened to be your doppleganger.

Poor Five, his regeneration really sucked didn't it. He couldn't even keep his companions safe, even on the one cricket-themed adventure he had.

Never ask "what's the worst that could happen" when it comes to Doctor Who. Ever.

Not that I know what the worst would be in this case, but it would probably be bad. Very bad. And cricket-themed.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. The last three companions have all been hot chicks having romantic adventures with the Doctor, so it's not exactly 100% Mary Sue free, either. Being the Doctor still sounds like more fun.

I'd rather be neither, but I'm boring and like living without people trying to kill me or send me to the wrong timeline.

Being the Doctor sounds fun but I'd hate to be (practically) immortal :/
