Maybe a Classic Who companion, but a Nu Who Companion? No way. You'd have a good chance of ending up trapped in an alternative universe, having your family held hostage for a year no one else knows exists AND have your innocence ruined, have your memories wiped, or end up stuck in 1930's New York City. Nah, I wouldn't want to be a Companion.

(Also see: Why I wouldn't want to be a Hogwarts student. Or a slayer. Or other things fans say they'd love to be even though the series have it that being those things can really, really suck. Yes, I know I'm being way too practical about fantasy!

Lots of Classic Who companions had it really rough, too. Look at poor Jamie, just for an example.

And Tegan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHjr4JusPA8

Or Peri. She was either shaved bald then mindwiped to let her body be hijacked by an alien (and then her body was slaughtered by Brian Blessed) or she ended up in a marriage of convenience with Brian Blessed.

Being a Hogwarts student wouldn't be too bad as long as you didn't go there at the same time as Harry. You gotta think that was kind of an abnormal situation.

In terms of fatalities, probably. At least I hope so. But it was still full of lousy teachers and had no humanities classes.

You wouldn't want to be there during Harry's parent's time-period either.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Or Hagrid and Tom Riddle's time period.

Pshhhh, come on, only like one student actually died. that's a very low casualty rate.

and you're going to run into a few kids killed by giant basilisks when you run a school, that's just a fact.

Hmm I'm starting to think "Hogwarts isn't safe any longer" is more a mission statement than anything else.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I don't want to be a companion because, on top of having terrible social anxiety and being afraid of pretty much everything, I'm fat and I have a knee injury. I can't run away from anything.

I think I'd rather be a companion than a Hogwarts student, though. The Doctor's idea of trying to keep you safe is, "Everything outside this door wants to kill you. Stick with me, listen to me, and I will do everythign in my power to keep that from happening." Hogwarts' idea of trying to keep you safe is, "Everything outside this door wants to kill you. Good luck with that."

This's an interesting thought.
Is it because Hogwarts is just a school with too many people to pay everyone attention individualy? Living in Hogwarts and after finishing it is less personalised and therefore more realistic.
HP world is unsafe in a sense of terrorism times unsafe, whereas DW is more in a dangerouse vacation sense.
