I really, really miss cigarettes, and sometimes I spend an embarrassing amount of effort trying to figure out how to smoke them without someone noticing the smell.

Protip: there's no way to do that. Non-smokers have way, way better olfaction than even ex-smokers. We can smell it even if you can't.

Protip: Not entirely true. I've managed it more than once. (And yes, the particular group that was involved would have said something.)

I doubt it. Let's say you're correct in assuming those people would say something individually (because, idk, they all care about you). You have to consider that in a group situation, you have no way of knowing how much the bystander effect was in effect, and how much people might not have been willing to publically bring up a contentious issue.

tl;dr just because no one said anything doesn't mean they didn't know. I almost guarantee you, someone did know.

yeah I am skeptical of this, my ex-smoker mother can smell people smoking through walls and inside cars. I do not have those kinds of powers.

Two things: I should have said recent ex smokers, with the definition of recent being 1-5 years, and I should have qualified that with the fact that that's a very general finding and would definitely be subject to something like how discerning an individual's sense of smell was before smoking compared to a non-smoker's sense of smell.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone who was a smoker for a number of years and then stopped for long enough would have a sensitivity to the various compounds in cigarette smoke.

I can smell people smoking through walls and inside cars too, though.

Yeah, then that's well within the time frame of developing a drug sensitivity.

...That or she just has a very acute sense of smell.
