I strongly disagree. If anything I feel like the show is getting darker and darker. Not saying there haven't been plenty of sweet moments lately (and I'm not going to pretend I haven't enjoyed them either), but the storyline is ramping up and it feels like shit is about to go down. Granted, it's felt like that for a while, so I suppose I can understand where you're coming from (from that angle), but...with everything that's going on with Dana, StrexCorp and Cecil's defiance, I think things are just as interesting as ever. I hope StrexCorp goes down and Cecil has something to do with it.

Same. The random creepiness was fun, but you can't keep doing the random shtick before it gets repetitive and boring.

I don't mind random creepiness at all because I do tend to really enjoy standalone episodes and monster of the week type stories (looking at you, first two seasons of SPN), but I do think it's good to get away from that now and then and do something different. I'm loving the whole StrexCorp storyline, how it's changing (and threatening) Nightvale, and Cecil's evolution. His jabs at Strex are amazing and the thought that Nightvale might rebel against them is incredibly exciting.

Cecil snarling at Strex is the best thing ever. When he gets that little growl in his voice I want to join Tamika Flynn's army.

Yes! Cecil's open disdain for Strex and his roundabout threats during the cookie episode are two of my favorite things to happen in Nightvale. Ever. He's delightful when he's being rebellious. I want him to somehow help Tamika Flynn or urge the citizens of Nightvale to take back their town. I want to see Strex go down violently with Cecil urging everything on. Now is a very exciting time for Nightvale.

Tamika is the best character in the show and I want to join her army regardless. Cecil's wonderful larger-than-life quiet anger is just icing on the cake.

+1 - even the show itself has poked fun at how the MOTW episodes often tend to fall into the same formula. I like the random creepiness but it needs to be balanced out by an overarching story, because it's boring as fuck to have every conflict the town faces get resolved in under 30 minutes.

I thought Cookies was interesting because it brought Cecil as openly into conflict with Station Management and Strex as we've seen so far. It may not have had the other worldliness of some episodes, but it definitely gave me the ratcheting tension I was after.

Exactly, the tension was delicious. Worrying, but delicious. I'm loving the seriousness of the current story arc and hope we don't get a conclusion TOO fast, simply because I think it's brilliant. Cecil's hate for Strex gives me life.
