I stopped listening once it got a overarching plot. It became much less creepy and random to me. :(

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
it has an overarching plot now? I stopped listening a little after the Valentine's episode.

Oh, you might have enjoyed 45-- it *is* a little bit tied into the tiny city, and therefore into overarching plot stuff, but it has a lot of that creepy random feel. It definitely has the same *tone* as some of the creepier stuff. There were bits that never really got explained, and just a soft menace. There was a tiny bit mentioning Dana and Strex.

If you liked 'A Story About You', then you might enjoy it, it has some call backs to that and some of the pre-overarching plot feel, if you listen to it on its own without then also listening to the ongoing threads re Strex and Dana.

I think the last one I listened to was A Beautiful Mind. But I had no idea there was a vocal point of the fandom who wanted...nice words?

I guess the secretmaker is referring to the group of fans that really like fluffy domestic stuff and thinks the show is catering to those fans. But there that group in about every fandom so hell if I know.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
NGL, the fandom ruined this for before it got a real plot.
kaijinscendre: (Default)

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2014-04-16 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that was a huge part of why I stopped listening. The fandom is one of the most hateful, entitled groups I have seen.

I strongly disagree. If anything I feel like the show is getting darker and darker. Not saying there haven't been plenty of sweet moments lately (and I'm not going to pretend I haven't enjoyed them either), but the storyline is ramping up and it feels like shit is about to go down. Granted, it's felt like that for a while, so I suppose I can understand where you're coming from (from that angle), but...with everything that's going on with Dana, StrexCorp and Cecil's defiance, I think things are just as interesting as ever. I hope StrexCorp goes down and Cecil has something to do with it.

Same. The random creepiness was fun, but you can't keep doing the random shtick before it gets repetitive and boring.

I thought Cookies was interesting because it brought Cecil as openly into conflict with Station Management and Strex as we've seen so far. It may not have had the other worldliness of some episodes, but it definitely gave me the ratcheting tension I was after.

Did you just entirely miss the part of Cookies where Strex was blatantly threatening to harm Cecil's niece? I don't see how the episode was "feel-good."

Janice.

Yeah.

It was Janice.

What

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I don't understand why you think "Cookies" was just "fluffy feel-good nonsense."

It heavily alludes to that fact that a evil corporation (that has explitly murdered and desecrated people's bodies) knows the locations of several young girls and has plans to use them as child soldiers and/or harm them in awful ways. And Cecil's niece happens to be one of them.

I don't know about you, but that's pretty heavy if you ask me...

Re: What

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-04-17 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
lmao, mte. The last few episodes (haven't heard the latest one yet, but) have been dark and disturbing. Plus you've got Cecil threatening one of his co-workers on air ("Daniel looks to have a lot of blood"), and (like you mentioned) the way Strex keeps trying to find ways to harm and silence Cecil. Random happenings are one thing, but Strex doesn't go away in one episode; they're a very real, serious threat that's been around and is slowly building up into what I imagine will be some terrible confrontation or revolution.

[personal profile] diet_poison 2014-04-17 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
wait, it's one episode and you're worried about the overall direction of the show now?

EVERY show longer than like 12 episodes has a crappy one here and there. Plus there's nothing wrong with a little audience acknowledgement/pandering as long as it's not OTT. It's one ep.

Unless there's something you left out.

With how terrible (and unfortunately, vocal) the fandom is, I'm not surprised WTNV is going to shit.

1) Sorry, OP, but it almost feels like you listened to the first five minutes or so (aww, Cecil gushing over Khoshekh, oooh, THAT'S why he hates Steve, heee, Cecil is such a good uncle!) and then... totally missed Lauren threatening both Janice and Tamika, who are both LITTLE GIRLS, and Cecil urging rebellion as openly as he can. Cookies was plenty dark, the fact that it DID start out light and sweet is almost what makes it more creepy.

2) Well, we got a new episode like two days ago. Are kidnappings, a dark planet lit by no sun, and stabbings dark enough for you?

(Actually, IS this the second time someone has unambiguously died after from the Apache Tracker (and possibly assorted interns) in the show?)

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
ISTR comments about bodies in the street on Valentine's day, and I think the shape in Grove Park vaporized a couple non-interns.

I don't know why I can't get into WTNV. On paper it looks like everything I could want in a story (I love random wacky silliness, I love dark stuff, mysterious stuff, supernatural, and toss in a bit of a same-sex relationship and I'm over the moon), but listening to it always puts me to sleep. I haven't ever gotten more than a few eps into the series.

Were... were we not listening to the same episode? I mean, I don't think it's at all plotless fluff when this episode A) gives us a huge chunk of potential backstory for Cecil's hatred of Steve Carlsberg (or at least deepens what their relationship is and why Cecil can't just ignore the guy, maybe he hated him before and would have anyway), a bit of a bombshell re Cecil having a living relative... and Strex buying a volunteer organization in order to better hunt down Tamika Flynn/possibly replace their taken helicopter pilots with young girls/threaten someone Cecil cares about in order to shorten the leash they have him on.

It wasn't quite as 'random' creepy, but it was DEFINITELY creepy to me, and it was DEFINITELY plotty.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
As an aside, the buildup to the Steve Carlsberg reveal was beautiful. Just the way the tone of Cecil's voice changed was enough to make you go, "Wait, is this going where I think it is? Oh my God, it is."
