Lol at all the "reaching" comments. Benioff and Weiss were the ones who added the castration scene in season 3 and the random naked lady sexposition bit with Sandor and Bronn.

There was a naked lady in that scene? I was too busy shipping it to notice.

Re: SPOILERS

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
And those naked ladies changed the course of the story and the characterization... how exactly?

Re: SPOILERS

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
How about there's no need for it and if you need graphic nudity to keep the audience interested you have failed as a writer?

YEAH

I'M TIRED OF ALL THE GRAPHIC NUDITY IN MY SERIES BASED ON BOOKS THAT ARE PRETTY FRANK ABOUT EVERYTHING INCLUDING BOOBS

IT'S UNNECESSARY IN MY MURDEROUS INCEST DRAGON FUNTIMES

Re: SPOILERS

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
HDU. THE INCESTIOUS RAPING PEDOPHILIC SEX SCENES IN THE BOOKS HAVE SO MUCH MORE PURPOSE.

Re: SPOILERS

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
FFS.

The books ARE graphic but not gratuitously so like "the prostitutes want Pod's dick" or the random sexposition scenes with Littlefinger and Ros.

I am down with Sandor and Bronn being in a scene together, so I see no problem there. Missed opportunity in the book, if anything.

Re: SPOILERS

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
so what was the problem with those scenes, that they had grinding in them? How is that changing anything about what GRRM wrote at all.

Re: SPOILERS

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
They're examples of stuff not in GRRM's original script.

Re: SPOILERS

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
gasp the random naked ladies then must mean that Brienne/Jaime was totes not canon

Re: SPOILERS

What are you talking about?

And while I'm sure money always helps one's opinion, I believe GRRM when he says he's okay with it so far.

if he doesn't have a problem with the differences (or wrote them) I don't.

Re: SPOILERS

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
But Theon's castration was heavily implied in ADWD.

Re: SPOILERS

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Theon is castrated, I think anon is saying that the two women arousing him was the thing GRRM didn't write.

Was it? I never got that impression in the books.

Re: SPOILERS

A lot of Theon's internalization of his torture is about him being "not a man" or "not a whole man", which clearly affects his psyche more than missing digits/teeth. Roose is pissed at Ramsay for that in particular, because it makes Theon less valuable as a hostage (what good is he as Balon's heir without genitalia?) that way.

And when Ramsay forces Theon on Jeyne, Theon doesn't understand at first is all, "um, how??" Whereupon Ramsay tells him to use his mouth.

Re: SPOILERS

[personal profile] greenvelvetcake 2014-04-17 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I always interpreted the "not a real man" as him feeling literally subhuman after Ramsay's treatment.

Re: SPOILERS

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
And that's the difference between the books and the show. The books imply the horrific stuff Ramsay does, the show feels the need to rub it in our faces. You can't just show Theon after the fact and put two and two together, you have to have two naked ladies molesting him before having Ramsay come out and castrate him.

Re: SPOILERS

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I imagine that having pages and pages written from inside the characters' heads makes it easy to just imply things than having only 10 hours per season and about a million plotlines to get through.

Re: SPOILERS

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
You do realize that the show doesn't do POV, right?

Re: SPOILERS

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
You can still imply that Theon has been tortured and castrated just by showing him in such a state with missing fingers.

This reminds me of dudebros going WAH WAH WHY DO THEY SHOVE THE GAY DOWN OUR THROATS?? IN THE BOOK IT WAS SUBTLE!

Maybe because it's kind of hard to, say, see Renly and Loras banging from Cat's POV?

Re: SPOILERS

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Oh fuck off. If anything the LACK of any meaningful gay scene in comparison to all the heterosexual sex scenes is more of an indication of the 'male gaze' that the show is going for.

Re: SPOILERS

tbh I always thought the books were more graphic when it comes to Theon's torture. Yes, the castration was never explicitly mentioned. OTOH, we have lots of detail about how much pain Theon is in from having his fingers flayed and how they're then rotting off, how he can't eat because Ramsay pulled is teeth etc etc. We also get a lot more details about Theon's psychological breakdown.

So yeah, overall, I found the book scenes to be way more graphic and disturbing than anything they've shown in the series.
