The canon explanation for why Superman doesn't kill

Clearly, the only way for superheroes to put supervillains down for good is to kill the writers who refuse to let them die or stay in prison.

(If we set aside authorial meddling, I'm all for private citizens doing what the state won't or can't. I live in a country where I can rely on police to arrest criminals. If the police cannot be trusted to do that, someone needs to fill their role, and vigilantes--superhuman or otherwise--are just a bad solution rather than no solution.)

Kingdom Come has the single best reason for superheroes not to kill: because with their god-like power, if they take it as far as being the judge, jury, and executioner, then they are putting themselves above humanity. They are not above humanity.
