I have to agree with the OP on this one because Zod was introduced into the comics and Superman did kill Zod (albeit indirectly). Superman has killed a very small number of people because there was literally no other option, but he didn't stop being a good guy. It's really much more interesting and compelling for a character to cross their own line and live with those consequences. A large part of World's Finest was devoted to exploring both Batman and Superman reacting to deaths they caused. In Kingdom Come, Superman even made a point of letting Joker have a trial when Joker blew up everyone Superman held dear.

I'd like to think we can give Superman a little more credit for having the emotional depth to recognize that, even after the fact, that nothing truly good gets accomplished by murdering out of revenge.
