Fanbase shifts

Have you ever been part of a fandom that shifted drastically because of the introduction of new source material? And did you like it more pre or post new material?

Inspired by one.

Final Fantasy VII, before the Compilation, and while the Compilation was being released. Definitely a better fandom before the Compilation, now it seems like half the fandom hasn't even played the game. I mean, whatever, but to me, the game is what FFVII is and it's weird to participate in a fandom that's not actually about that.

SPN, when Castiel was introduced.

The fandom shifted like Howl's moving castle taking off at a run.

I jumped ship, but not because of Cas.

+1 to SPN and Castiel. I can't say I jumped ship, because that implies some kind of concerted action - I feel like the fandom just sailed on without me. It wasn't so much Castiel per se, but that the introduction of the angels added a lot of static to the mythology IMO, and I lost interest.

Old-school Marvel superhero fan, so... short version, yes. :)

Once Upon a Time fandom, pre and post Hook. Pretty sure he's not the cause, certainly not the sole cause, of the fandom's decline, but he's up there. The whole show "changed direction so fast you could hear the squeal of the brakes," to quote one of my favorite fanauthors, when the writers got the rights to Neverland and they abandoned their planned plot for most of season 2. The problem is, once they dropped the plot for new shiny things, they never really picked it back up. Not that the writing was ever super amazing, but some of it was good and most of it was serviceable. Now the show's straining to hold together with all the hasty retconning going on. I liked the show because it was basically Disney fanfic. Except now it's bad, depressing Disney fanfic, instead of enjoyable cheese.

I have mixed feelings about the huge influx of reboot!Trek fans into my Trekosphere. I'm happy for all the new fans, but I don't like anything about the movies except the cast, and I don't really want to talk about them. That's pretty selfish, though. Mostly, it's a good thing.

Star Wars fandom left me behind a long, long time ago. I'm ok with that.
