My mom has taken to saying "I looked for it, but I don't find it," which she's picked up from somewhere recently and it sounds off to me. I stopped correcting her grammar a long time ago because she got so offended, but I broke down and told her it's "I couldn't" or "I didn't." But typing it out, it doesn't seem so wrong? I think it's because she's mixing tenses.
