Re: Have you ever liked a movie/tv show better then the book it's based on?

I like Shakespeare in motion more than reading it, so the adaptions win me over. That includes movies like Romeo + Juliet.

I actually love Luhrman's Romeo + Juliet, aside from a few odd quibbles (Paris now sticks out a little oddly among his kinsmen, for example). It's an OTT acid trip of a modern AU, but it's kind of awesome, and had lots of cool little details. My favourite for implication is that Lord & Lady Capulet went to the masque as Caesar & Cleopatra, which says interesting things about the state of their relationship and their knowing about the state of their relationship. Also, this version of the Prince was awesome.

It's also one of the best attempts I've seen to keep the original language despite a thoroughly different setting. The edge of melodrama and the OTT-ness of the whole film helps mask the incongruity a bit, and the emotion and acting usually manages to fill the words. Mercutio's dream speech took on a whole other meaning in this context.

I don't know, I've always enjoyed it as an adaptation. It's not my favourite Luhrman (Strictly Ballroom), but it's a lot of fun.

Oh God, yes to all of this. It's not even my favorite adaptation of Romeo and Juliet (Zeffirelli 4 life) but there are so many smart, cracky, OTT brilliant touches. And it's definitely my favorite Friar Lawrence.

I think Kurasawa did a better Scottish Play than the original Shakespeare.

He totally did. It works so fucking well being set in feudal Japan.

Well, that makes sense, since they are plays and are meant to be watched and experienced, not read. I like reading the plays, but nothing beats a good performance.

This. It's like saying, wow, movies are more enjoyable than the scripts they're written on. It actually gets me somewhat upset now that so many of my teachers had us comb over his plays with a fine tooth comb and NEVER offered up an accompanying performance.

My freshmen English teacher had us fill out a worksheet in which we had to go through every single act and pick out physical descriptions of the characters. If I could travel back in time, I'd just write "whatever actor is currently playing them" under each column.

The best Shakespeare class I ever took was one where we never saw a performance (it was a condensed class; we didn't have the time), but almost all of the lessons were about asking us how we'd stage them and making us think about them as performances rather than something written down. One of the options for the final project -- which only I and one other class member chose, which surprised me -- was to film yourself performing a monologue from one of the plays we'd read and write a paper about why you made the staging/acting/costuming choices you did.

Fuck, that sounds awesome.

I wish my Shakespeare class was like that.

A lot my teachers had the same idea. We would usually watch a movie adaptation of whatever we were reading as we read it. A lot of scenes and lines come across better when performed.
