Disagree. I went on a foreign Let It Go binge, and the English sounds the best by far, imo. There are other talented singers, but I don't think any of them were better (and I started listening expecting to find one I liked more)

(Anonymous) 2014-04-18 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
...I don't get how anyone with working ears and anything in between them could come to that conclusion. All of the non-English versions I've heard knock Idina Menzel out of the park. She kind of sucks to be honest.

Or some people just have different musical tastes from you.

*GASP*

(Anonymous) 2014-04-18 11:54 am (UTC)(link)
It's more likely that they're so used to this 'belting' nonsense that they can't appreciate a true singer when they hear one.

Idina Menzel is objectively terrible. As someone else mentioned, her vibrato is all wrong, she struggles for the notes and even cracks in the official version ("I'm never going back"), and she screams that high E at the end so badly you can tell it had to be corrected in post production.

This isn't opinion. This is fact that anyone who has studied voice can tell you. She's godawful. But she has good marketing and that's apparently all that counts these days.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-18 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
lmao yes, Tony award winning and Broadway superstar actress Idina Menzel is "objectively terrible"

you are sure a musical expert lol

(you're not the one who thought the Japanese version was good, are you? shudder)

(Anonymous) 2014-04-18 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, because terrible popular artists never win awards ever!

No, I'm not. Thanks for playing.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-18 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Milli Vanilli won a Grammy in 1990. Awards don't mean shit, dude. Try addressing the points AYRT made about Menzel's (lack of) technical ability instead of pulling out the "BUT THEY WON AN AWARD" defense. People win awards they don't deserve all the damn time.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-18 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. Belting does not require any sort of talent or training; it's basically controlled musical yelling. It takes training to be able to properly control your voice, which it's obvious that she can't do given exactly the issues you mentioned.

Just look at how terrible she sounded live at the Oscars without the help of post-production editing and sound technicians.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-18 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
And before anyone accuses me of being a hater, I've had years of vocal training. The above anon is right - from an objective standpoint, she's just bad.

AYRT

This fellow voice student is trying to high-five you through the computer screen. Even with post-production and sound technicians, she's awful.

Or some people genuinely enjoy her voice regardless of you using your extensive musical academia knowledge to tell them they shouldn't. People just suck that way, don't they?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-18 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Well yes. The masses are asses. Especially when they're accustomed to well-marketed mediocrity masquerading as talent.

I'm so sorry. Putting up with us musical plebeians and our awful music must be a terrible burden for you.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-18 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't call it a "burden." More like "moderate nuissance."
cakemage: (Stormer)

[personal profile] cakemage 2014-04-18 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That's why the gods invented earbuds. You listen to your superior music that would cause lesser mortals' heads to explode from sheer excellence, and we'll listen to the primitive thumping of rocks being beat against other rocks and vaguely harmonic grunts that we have the audacity to call music, and everyone will be happy.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-18 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
If people could at least admit the "music" they listen to is hitting rocks together and grunting, it wouldn't be quite as annoying. Sure, like Idina Menzel all you want. Just admit she's awful but you like her anyway. Hell, there are terrible artists I like. But I don't pretend they're talented when I know they aren't and I like their work because it's catchy and fun. I fully admit they're awful, but I like them anyway and I give no fucks.

Don't be like dipshit Award Anon up there try to argue that Idina's super-gifted because she's got a few accolades when you have people with vocal training telling you "no, she's fucking terrible and here are all the things she's doing wrong."

I'm not going to base my opinions on a viewpoint that some random anonymous music student is trying to force on me. Get over yourself, and stop putting words in my mouth based on what some other random anon said.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-18 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I love how "she has shitty singing technique" is still an opinion to you.
cakemage: (Stormer)

[personal profile] cakemage 2014-04-18 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I love how you still think I'm taking you seriously.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-18 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I love how you claim you aren't but you keep replying because you're ~amused or whatever the edgy equivalent is these days.

While I won't deny I am enjoying this little back-and-forth to some extent (fandom_wank is going through a dry spell and I need my fix of pointless, stupid arguments, even if it involves me generating them), I'm mostly just bored and killing time in-between downloading Skyrim mods. I like Idina Menzel well enough, but in truth, I mostly just find you to be a snooty know-it-all who's only interested in telling everyone about your undoubtedly stunning credentials and acting as though that makes everything you say about anything singing-related absolute, incontrovertible fact.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-18 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately for you, good and bad technique is absolute, incontrovertible fact. If facts make you feel bad that's your problem.

[personal profile] cakemage 2014-04-18 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
My apologies. I missed the part where you became the highest authority on vocalization techniques known to man, the sole arbiter of what qualifies as good and bad singing. I'll know next time to come straight to you and ignore any other so-called "trained vocalists" who disagree with your almighty decrees.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-18 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Good. I'll leave you my card. See, that wasn't so hard, was it?
