I must have a similar outlook to you on LotR. I like the books. I like the movies. The two mediums work for what they are, though I love having the visuals the movies give.

Dune - I came at that backwards, though if the early 80s Dune movie were the only example, I like the book better for the detail and the lack of pointlessly silly additions in the movie. The Dune Messiah/Children of Dune miniseries however was what eventually persuaded me to go get copies of the books and try read them again. I still haven't finished CoD though, it's pretty dense, and in a way reminds me of how I feel about LotR.
